plus jacob's still sort of human. edward had inhuman strength, so saving her from the van didn't take much effort.
when jacob saved bella, i read in an outtake from stepheniemeyer.com that he phased and looked for her, than had to phase back, something sam couldn't even do. so for jacob it took some effort, but he still did it! <333333333333333
