It's the reason why Jake is what he is, he's a shapeshifter, not a dog as you so elequently put it, to kill vampires, it's in his nature.

I think it's almost an equal chance, but here's why I think Jake could win:
Jacob is actually faster than a vampire, because he caught Laurent in New Moon. He also heals fast, so Edward wouldn't be able to gain much advantage there. And I'm not sure if this is actually true with mature vampires, but if Edward got his arms around him, would it shatter his body? Plus Jacob was born to kill vampires. It's in his blood, it's his natural instinct. You saw how easily Seth took Riley in Eclipse. Edward would think of Carlisle while fighting, which would marr his willingness to kill. He would also think of Bella, how she would be crushed, and he would worry, while Jacob would know that Bella would love him once Edward died. But Edward has the mindreading, so Jake would have to act pretty much on instinct. Even with all these advantages, however, I think that Jacob was being a little cocky when he said it would be a piece of cake to kill Edward, because Edward would fight, fight HARD, and Jacob would definetly (and sadly) walk away with a few scratches.

Edward...all I've got is 'nearly indestructable.' jacob wouldn't be able to do much. he's also got the mindreading

I think Jacob would win, not because Edward is weaker than him but Edward knows that he would hurt Bella if he fight with Jacob so he would let Jacob win. True gentleman.

mrsblack_1089, actually your wrong, werewolfs aren't faster than vampires, yes jacob cauught up to laurent, but he couldn't even catch victoria. he tried, but she outran them, end went in to the water. and anyway if he couldn't even catch victoria, he definetly won't catch edward, cause he's the fastest, even for vampires. Seth took riley easily in eclipse, cause he was a newborn. Even if Seth is young, werewolfs don't have problems with technique when they're young like vampire's do, the only disavantage of a young werewolf, is that he's not as strong as when he ages. thirdly, yes it is in their blood to fight against vampires, only because they are the only ones who CAN defeat them, not that they're stronger. And the whole edward will think of Bella if they got in a fight, yeah probably, but if ever he DOES fight, bella's thoughts on the matter wouldn't really matter, since he already decided to fight jacob. Cause edward would never make that decision, knowing that bella would be hurt, so something really important would have had to happen to throw all that out of the window, and fight jacob. And i think you're being a little too hopefull, saying, jacob would know that bellla would love him once edward was dead. IMPOSSIBLE, only because she would never forgive him if he killed edward, she would probably kill herself afterward, or live hating jacob for the rest of her misrable life. her love for jacob isnt near ENOUGH, it's like sam's love for emily, and his love for leah, not even comparable. AND THEN to add to ALL that, edward can read minds!! so even if jacob DID go on instinct, it doesn't change much, cause his thoughts will always give him away a second befor his attack. people think about every thig they do, but it's just to quick for us to realise it. But it isnt for edward, as you saw in breaking dawn when fighting against victoria. So there's nothing jacob could do, to even touch edward, cause he'll always know it's coming. Even against JASPER, edward is tied, as you saw in eclipse. anyway TEAM EDWARD =)

The wolves' greatest strength is when they fight together, so if it was a one-on-one fight I think Edward'd win.

Honestly I’m not invested in the twilight series enough to be on either team but I do enjoy mythological beef and judging by the knowledge I’ve gained from these two creatures is that in fact vampires are faster but werewolves are tougher and stronger. Think of a human and a wolf. Naturally wolves are more formidable, although a human is smaller and can be much more agile. Now give them both major enhancement powers. A vampire is going to naturally have a harder time against a werewolf because although they’re more nimble, a werewolf is much more durable and able to outlast a vampires offensive barrage until it catches it and rips it into shreds. Coincidentally, Edward can read minds, therefor, Jacob would have a much harder time wearing a vampire such as Edward down with natural tankiness and counter strikes. Even still, it would take much effort and time to break down, Jacob, given that he is again... a superpowered wolf (which are already very tough, with thick skin, thick fur and toughened from the outdoor lifestyle). Furthermore, in the twilight world, Bella, can resist Edwards mindreading notably the only being to achieve this feat but the fact that she can raises the question... is it possible to learn, train and obtain this ability? If so, and Jacob mastered this, I would say he would clap Edward. If not, it would be a difficult battle between two skilled warriors and it would come to skill over stats. Quite like If you put Bruce lee vs the rock. Clearly Dwayne has the upper hand in strength and durability, Although Bruce is unmatched in speed and reaction, while also being equipped with surprising stopping power. If Bruce could keep out of Dwayne’s grasp and break him down, Dwayne would undoubtedly lose. Although if Dwayne ever got a good grapple on Bruce, he could snap Bruce in half. I say Edward though because the mindreading would be very hard to counter therefor it would prove extremely difficult to get ahold of Edward. I also see a lot of talk about emotions that Edward would have that might encumber him, this is ludicrous. It would be difficult but if Edward was driven to the point of fight to the death behaviour. He already would have stepped outside of that emotional barrier and also I’ve seen comments about them being nemesis’s. they are not each others nemesis. They actually have a respect between each other and have each other’s backs in the later movies.
