As you know I said I did two other versions of Chapter 10. Foreveryours asked if I could post them on and I thought 'Why not?' so here it is. You will see some similaraties between them and Chapter 10 but you know I kinda merged them together to make Chapter 10. These versions will not be accounted for in the continuation of the Kayla series. They are posted on here entirely for your interest as to how things could have turned out. They both start out the same way as Chapter 10. So here it goes!
[Note: I didn't call Edward 'The Lion' until the final Chapter 10. In the vampire version he is refered to as 'the bronze' and Jasper 'the blond'.
Vampire version.
I could see in the newborn’s mind that he was going to bite me. He was excited about getting to feed again and he felt slightly exhilarated that I had put up a fight. I was glad I had put up a fight too; at least I had tried to save myself.
A vicious snarl echoed through the trees. Something was coming to us, something angry. The vamp was angry at being interrupted but also slightly scared of the creature that had made such a terrifying noise. Two white blurs shot through the trees and both jumped on the creature, pushing him off me. There were now three white blurs and all of them crashed into a tree. The tree made a deafening crack as its roots were ripped up from the soil and the three blurs plus the trees slammed into the forest floor. The newborn was the first up and tried to run but a very familiar bronze haired vampire shot up and grabbed the newborn with one hand and floored him. The second vampire with honey blond hair stood up and picked up the newborn with both hands and slammed him into another tree. The tree snapped in half under the strength the vampire had used. The bronze vampire glanced back at me, his golden eyes full of concern and pain. A snarl came from the honey blond vampire and his eyes changed. They became cold and hard, his mind focusing on the fight. The newborn began to panic; his eyes were darting side to side, trying to find an escape. The bronze vampire attacked him and a deadly dance began. They ways they attacked each other and defended were much more graceful than anything I had done. The bronze was slightly faster than the newborn because he would be able to hear every move the newborn made before he did it. The blond had a century of experience behind him but the newborn was stronger and frequently there were metallic snaps as someone slipped in their defense. The blond vampire lunged suddenly and tore an arm off the newborn with his teeth. The newborn screamed and snarled at the vampires but they didn’t react to it. He tossed the arm onto the ground and I crawled back from it. The arm twitched and moved mindlessly, trying to get back to its owner. The bronze snarled ferociously at the newborn and I knew why. He hated this vampire, detested him, loathed it for attempting to hurt me. Rage and pain were the dominant emotions in this bronze vampire’s mind, nothing more. He struck the newborn again and again letting his rage take over. The blond stood at the side. It was apparent the bronze wanted this fight. Suddenly it was over. The newborn was kneeling on the ground and the bronze stood behind it with his mouth at its neck. With one simple movement the newborn keeled over, minus a head. The bronze swiftly began to dismember the body and the blond tore strips of wood off the tree they had up-rooted.
I watched all of this from the ground. I knew I had nothing to fear but the aggressive nature of these two vampires was scaring me more than the newborn did. I had never seen them like this before. The blond haired vampire began stack the strips of wood together, making a bonfire. The bronze pulled out a silver rectangle from his pocket. There was a click and a flame appeared. He held the flame to the wood and it caught fire. He tossed the body parts onto the fire. I backed away from the bonfire and the vampires. I didn’t know what to do. Do I go over and thank them for saving my life? Do I stay here and wait for them to come to me? Or do I just run? The honey blond was the first to approach me. He walked slowly and deliberately, his hands held up palm outwards.
“Kayla,” he spoke quietly and slowly. “I won’t hurt you, I promise.”
I stared up into the vampires golden eyes and I felt any fear I had leave me.
“You’re hurt,” he said.
I stared dumbly at him before I remembered that I had run into the branch and cut my head. I put a hand to my forehead but all I felt was dried blood. Would that affect him?
“I’m ok,” he said, quickly. “I won’t go crazy.”
I smiled at him, to show I wasn’t afraid. He relaxed slightly but not fully. He was still as tense as he ever was.
Kayla.
I heard the velvet voice of Edward in my mind and he was beside me in less than second. I looked at the bonfire and saw thick and heavy purple smoke curling up towards the sky.
You’re hurt.
I’m fine.
I wrapped my arms around him and lay my head on his chest. He stroked my hair, softly, comforting me while images of what just happened flashed through my mind. The vampire with his blood red eyes, it on top of me and its teeth at my neck, Edward attacking the newborn with Jasper. They looked different in my mind and Edward could see this. They looked like actual vampires. Whenever I looked at them they always seemed more human than vampire but when they were fighting the newborn, their vampire side showed.
I’m not going to hurt you. Edward hugged me tight to his chest.
I know.
“We should move,” Jasper said, looking at the bonfire. “Someone will see that and call the police. We should move before they come.”
Edward nodded and he picked me up. He gently put me on his back. I locked my legs around his waist and my arms around his neck. I lay my head on his back and closed my eyes as he ran.
Wolves Version.
I could see in the newborn’s mind that he was going to bite me. He was excited about getting to feed again and he felt slightly exhilarated that I had put up a fight. I was glad I had put up a fight too; at least I had tried to save myself.
A vicious growl echoed through the woods. Something was lurking behind the trees, something big. The vamp was angry at being interrupted but also slightly scared of the creature that could have made such a terrifying noise. A huge beast erupted from the trees at the side and jumped at the vampire, pushing him off me. I stood up quickly and watched this huge thing attacking the vamp. It was the size of a horse, probably bigger, and had reddish brown coloured fur. Only when I saw it pounce at the vamp did I realise it was a wolf. I stared at this wolf shocked at seeing how massive it was. Surely they didn’t grow to be this big? Another two of these gigantic wolves sprang from the surrounding trees and helped its friend. One was pure black and the other a nice chocolate brown. I backed away from these beasts, worried that they might turn on me. They snapped their enormous jaws and growled fiercely. The vamp stared at these wolves his mind full of panic and fear. How could this vampire possibly be scared of them? He could easily kill them. The black wolf pounced on the vamp, digging his teeth into the vamp’s shoulder. The vamp was knocked off his feet and the wolf ripped off the vamp’s entire arm. The other two wolves attacked the vamp, tearing and shredding the vamp. I watched in horror as the limbs that the wolves tossed carelessly on the ground tried to put themselves back together. I was struck by a thought. Would I be able to read their thoughts? I had never tried to read an animal’s mind before but I had a hunch that they weren’t exactly normal wolves. I sought the mind of the reddish brown wolf, the one who had saved me from being bitten.
Sam, Quil. Will you be ok on your own?
I gasped when I heard this human voice. So they weren’t actual wolves.
Go to her, Jacob. Make sure she is unharmed.
I was surprised to hear someone else’s voice in this Jacob’s mind. Maybe they were telepathically linked or something. The reddish brown coloured wolf turned away from the attack and ran towards me. He stopped in front of me and nudged me with his nose, pushing me back into the trees. I took this as a hint to turn around and walk away from the fight. I walked through woods, the wolf always behind me. It was only now that I realised how dark it was. How long had I been in the woods with the vamp? I hated walking through the woods in the dark; it was kind of creepy and scary.
I stopped and turned around; about to ask the wolf where we were going but the wolf wasn’t there. I looked around me, searching for him. I couldn’t have lost him; he was too big to lose! I panicked. I hadn’t a clue where I was in this stupid forest.
“Jacob?” I called into the darkness. “Big, massive wolf?”
The fear that had disappeared when the he had come had appeared now he had left. Why save me from the vamp to leave me alone in the forest.
“OI!” I shouted. “Don’t just leave me here! Come back, you idiotic dog!”
“Who you calling a dog?”
I screamed, startled. A Native-American boy, who must have been over six feet tall, walked towards me from behind a tree. He was wearing nothing but cut off jeans. I recognised the voice from somewhere.
“Who are you?” I asked him, wary.
“According to you an idiotic dog,” the boy replied.
“Jacob?”
He nodded.
I was sure I recognised him too from somewhere. I stared at him trying to figure out where I had seen him.
“Do you remember me?” he asked. “I’m Jacob Black.”
“Jacob?” I asked, my mouth falling open. “Little Jay?”
“Not little Jay,” he said, looking slightly embarrassed. “But still Jacob.”
“Little Jacob Black,” I said, looking up at him. “I remember you when you where this high.”
I held my hand at shoulder-height. “What the hell happened?”
I could believe it. Jacob Black. The little boy I used to hang around with when I came to Forks for the holidays. Wow had he grown. We were the same age yet I was always taller.
“I could ask the same to you too,” Jacob said. “Taking on that bloodsucker like that? Amazing.”
I shrugged. “Nothing too special,” I said. “I could have had him, if he wasn’t a newborn.”
“So what are you?” I asked him. “Some kind of werewolf?”
“Yeah, kind of,” he said. “Details aren’t necessary at this point.”
“Same here. Thanks for saving me.”
“Where was your bloodsucker?”
I looked down. Yeah. Where was he?
“How did you know?” I asked him.
“We know everything,” Jacob answered mysteriously. “Plus your dad told my dad you were seeing Edward Cullen a lot.”
“Right,” I nodded. “You know, he didn’t know where I was. He’s probably having difficulty finding me. I didn’t tell him I was running into the woods.”
“Sure sure.”
He squinted in the dark at me.
“What?” I asked.
“There’s blood on your forehead,” he said, pointing.
I touched my forehead and felt dried blood.
“Oh yeah, I, uh, kind of ran into a tree.”
“A tree?” he asked, trying to stifle a laugh.
“Yes, I looked behind me to see where the vampire was but when I turned back round I ran into a tree.”
He stood there, his hand over his mouth, trying to stop his laughter.
“It’s not funny,” I said, angrily. “It hurt!”
His face straightened. “I am not laughing.”
I raised an eyebrow. It was evident he was. His broad shoulders were shaking as he silently laughed at my foolishness. He turned around, his shoulders still shaking and walked away from me.
“Where are you going?” My voice sounded more scared than I had intended.
“Taking you back,” he said, turning round to face me. “You scared of being left here alone?”
“Course not,” I scoffed. “I battle vampires. I’m not afraid of the forest.”
He grinned, obviously not believing me. He walked back to me and put an arm around my shoulders. I jerked away from him. His skin was hot, roasting hot. He was burning.
“You’re hot,” I said to him.
“I know,” he said, looking smug. “I’m handsome, aren’t I?”
“No.” I shook my head. “I mean, your skin is hot.”
“Oh,” he said. “That hot. Yeah, I am pretty hot. Comes with being a wolf.”
“Right.” I settled myself against him again. The heat from his skin was quite nice when you got over the initial shock of it. We began to walk through the trees away from any danger than skulked in the darkness.
