READ BEFORE GOING ON TO CHAPTER 4!!
Ok so some of you were confused by Kayla’s purpose. Do not fret. An explanation of what her purpose, why she has to protect people, and basically everything Charlie said to her is coming up now.
Kayla is an Azdi. These are a race of people that protect humans. That is there sole purpose. They protect humans from any attack by a supernatural being. For example, if a Nahadriah was on the loose running around like a mad man killing innocent humans, the nearest Azdi to the place where the killings were taking place would deal with the creature by either destroying it or giving it a choice to stop killing.
She also has to prevent the supernatural from revealing itself to the humans. (Like the newborns in Eclipse almost revealed themselves because of their little killing spree). They would explain the rules to the silly supernaturals and if they continue with their behaviour they have to be destroyed.
You could say that the Azdi are like the Volturi. Except Azdis don’t govern over the supernaturals. Their just there to keep everyone safe.
Azdis become Azdis when their parents put down the barrier that is around their mind. The barrier is there to protect from any creature that can read minds. If a young Azdi who hasn’t changed is attacked by a supernatural being they will not survive. Any evil supernatural creature will jump at the chance to take out an Azdi that has no abilities. When an Azdi is changed, when the barrier is broken, their whole body changes.
They become faster and stronger – this is so they keep up or run away from their enemy and be able to fight.
They senses become sharper - eyesight, hearing, even their sense of smell. This is so they can distinguish between the supernatural and human beings. Some supernatural creatures take the form of a human but even they can’t get it perfect and so subtle differences between them and a human can be spotted by Azdis.
They also have special abilities. These can range from telepathy (mind-reading) to being able to produce fireballs with your hands.
Kayla’s abilities are telepathy and telekinesis (moving objects with mind). Her telepathy is selective. She isn’t like Edward who can hear everyone’s thoughts whether he wants to or not. She has to enter someone’s mind to read it. (If you watch Heroes it’s like Matt Parkman except she doesn’t do the stupid face thing).
If you haven’t guessed by now, Edward couldn’t read Kayla’s mind because of the barrier. Now that the barrier is down he will be able to hear her thoughts clearly. You’re all probably wondering why Edward spoke to Kayla in the office at the end of Chapter 2. He spoke to her because he knew she was different. He could see the barrier in her mind. He knew something was strange about her that she would have a barrier across her mind.
In biology you would all have guessed that Edward was trying to resist his thirst and refrain from killing Kayla. Because of the change that she goes through, Kayla’s blood doesn’t have that effect on him. This doesn’t mean that he doesn’t find her appetizing – he does – it’s just not as strong. He does find the scent of her blood appealing and irresistible and such. It’s because of the abrupt change and how it smells different from the day before and how he can love it yet not want to rip her throat out.
