"Ok sorry about that" Jacob said to me "Can you phase back?" I found I could. I heard Jasper mutter "I wonder..." then he spoke louder with purpose "You phase when you're angry right?" Jacob nodded "She doesn't. I think she phases when one of you are upset. She does have to be relaxed to phase back but so do all the werewolves in the room." They all found this interesting.
"Did phasing hurt this time?" Embry asked me "Not as much" I lied "Is Quil alright?" I asked hesitantly. I didn't want to sound heartless nor did I want to be nosy. They hesitated too "Yeah... a friend of his fell and split her chin. She'll need stitches but she'll be fine" Jacob said. My face must have shown my skepticism because he sighed and continued "Sometimes we as wolves latch on to people very strongly. When we umm.. imprint as we call it on girls they are our first priority. Quil imprinted on Claire and she's like his sister or even daughter. Later, when she's older he'll love her in a different age. We don't age until we can stop phasing so Quil will stay the same and before long the age gap they have now will be gone." My eyes flew from Jacob to Renesmee and a few people nodded.
Do you think I'll still age?" I asked Carlisle quietly. He seemed to know the most about these things. "Based on what I've seen I would think so. Though it will be difficult to tell for the next few decades" he smiled.
Later I talked semi-privately with Jacob. "Is Leah upset with me for falling asleep on her?" I asked slowly "No. She just went to go check on her brother. She doesn't really like hanging out with vampires." I decided to ask one more question for now "Do I have to run those ummm... 'patrols' you were talking about?" He shook his head "No you're good. Don't worry about that. We'll try to make sure you don't phase at all. Now that we know it's us making you phase we should be able to avoid it."
The wolves seemed to think I was sticking around. They were like a family to each other and I was accepted as soon as I phased. They knew I wouldn't be as helpful as the others but it didn't seem to matter to them. I learned that the wolves protected all humans and that recently various events were enough to not only let them co-exist with animal drinking vampires, but also protect them. I was more at ease with the werewolves than the vampires but they were still deadly.
Jacob was usually easygoing. As the leader, (the "Alpha" as they called it) I got the feeling he would do what it took to protect his pack but he tried to do what was right. Leah was his second in command. She could be bitter but they all seemed to think she was happier than she used to be. Quil and Embry both seemed about as much like normal teenage boys as they could be given the circumstances. Seth, Leah's brother, seemed very well loved. Sort of everyone's kid brother. Even some of the vampires (Edward, Bella and Esme in particular) seemed to think of him that way.
