Carlisle’s POV

I dropped the syringe into the yellow box on the trolley and smiled at the patient. Her name was Leanne. She’d just been bitten by her dog, Pixie, who was an ‘overexcited’ rottweiler. I’d just given her a tetanus jab.
“You really should have your dog seen to,” I said, as I rolled down her sleeve. With my eyes I could see more faint bite marks up her arms.
She looked down at the bandage I’d wrapped around her hand. I saw tears forming in her eyes.
“They’ll put her down,” she said, quietly. “She’s all I’ve got.”
She sniffed and then looked up again, a smile forced onto her face.
“Well,” she jumped off the bed. “Thank you, Dr Cullen. Hopefully I won’t see you in here again.”
“Yes,” I said, as she left the cubicle. “Hopefully.”
I pulled off the green towel that was on the bed and put that into the yellow box as well. Hygiene Safety. Under the trolley was disinfectant and I was just about to spray it onto the leather bed when I smelled one of the wolves. That was odd. They didn’t usually come to the hospital. They had my number they could just call me.
“He’s in here,” I heard Jacob say. I sprayed the disinfectant on the leather bad and quickly wiped it with a cloth. I put some more green towel on the bed and I was just leaving the cubicle when I saw Jacob and Kayla. I was surprised to see Kayla dressed as if for bed. She was still in nightwear, a camisole and shorts.
“Jacob, Kayla,” I said. “How nice to see you.”
Kayla looked worried. Her eyes darted from side to side and she seemed to have a permanent frown. Jacob on the other hand, looked completely relaxed. I wondered what was going on.
“CArlisle, can I speak to you about something?” Kayla asked me.
“Of course,” I beckoned for my new daughter to come into the cubicle. Jacob began to follow but she stopped him with one hand.
“I want to speak to him alone,” she said. “Just go get a drink, okay?”
“I thought you were here for medicine?” he frowned. He knew there was something wrong and she wasn’t telling him. This must be serious.
“Just go, okay?” she pushed him and then stepped into the cubicle with me. She didn’t speak, she sat there listening. When we both heard Jacob’s footsteps getting quieter and quieter she spoke.
“I think there’s something wrong with me!” she cried. “My stomach! There’s something in my stomach!”
She lifted up her camisole and I saw what she meant. It looked liked she had gained weight but from where her stomach started to expand outwards, it looked like there might be something inside her. Usually people who gained weight, it would show almost everywhere. In women, especially the thighs, the bum and the breasts. But Kayla only seemed to be gaining it in her stomach judging from her still slim frame.
“Don’t worry,” I said and I lifted her gently onto the bed. I pushed her back and reading my mind, she exposed her stomach. I prodded it gently, trying to feel for something. It was hard, but I couldn’t feel anything definite.
“What do you think you might have?” I asked her. She wouldn’t have come here if she hadn’t panicked she might have something dangerous.
“A tumour,” she said. “What else could it be?”
I didn’t answer and tried to keep my thoughts clear. I knew what else it could be. I didn’t want to worry her too early though.
“I think you should have an ultrasound,” I lifted my hands and she pulled her top back down. “I’ll be able to see just what is inside you.”
“Do you think it’s something serious?” she looked scared. Edward had called me to tell me she was ill. She didn’t look ill to me now.
“Are you tired, Kayla?” I asked her, ignoring her question. I couldn’t give her an answer. It depended on what she thought was serious.
“A little, yeah,” she said, sitting up. “But I’ve just woke up.”
“You’ve been having nightmares.”
“Yeah, almost every night.”
I nodded and helped her off the bed.
“I’ll give you the scan now,” I said. “When was the last time you went to the toilet?”
She thought for a moment.
“Now that you mention it, I do need to pee.”
“Just hold it in,” I told her. “You need a full bladder for the scan.”
She nodded and I led her to the X-ray Department where the ultrasound machines were. A nurse was still there and she smiled at me as I went past.
“Dr Cullen, we’re closing this department now,” she said.
“I just want to give my daughter-in-law a quick scan,” I said to her, smiling. “It won’t take more than ten minutes.”
I continued to smile as I opened the door to one of the ultrasound rooms. Kayla stepped inside, smiling, and I closed the door behind me.
“God,” she said. “That nurse wants to jump you.”
“Tell me about it,” I replied, helping her onto the bed. “Just lift up you top, that’s it.”
I squeezed some gel onto her skin, just below her belly button.
“That’s cold,” she gasped. She lay still, her hands just above her belly button, holding her top up.
I picked up the probe, a small and very thick piece of equipment that looked like a very blunt pen. I put it on her skin and began to move it around. The gel would help the probe make good contact with her body. Kayla watched the screen. The ultrasound worked by sending sound waves through her body. If they hit anything solid it echoed back and a picture would form.
“What are you looking for?” she asked as I continued to move the probe across her skin.
“I don’t know,” I sighed. I wasn’t seeing anything. Maybe I was wrong. “Do you mind if I look further down?”
She shook her head and I pulled down the top of her shorts. I slid the probe gently across the area just below her stomach and above the rim of her shorts and that’s when I saw it.
“Oh my God, Carlisle!” she almost screamed. “What the heck is that?!”

Jacob’s POV

I heard Kayla. Screaming at the doctor.
“What the heck is that? Tell me! Am I going to die?!”
I rushed through the corridors, picking out her scent and following it. It led me to the X-ray Department. I looked around and saw no one but a nurse.
“You shouldn’t be in here,” she said, advancing on me. “This is for authorised personnel only.”
I could hear her. She was in one those rooms over there.
“Is Dr Cullen here?” I asked her. “My sister is with him.”
The nurse narrowed her eyes.
“He’s taken her in for a scan. It seems he‘s given her some very distressing news.”
“Can I see her?” I asked the nurse. I put on my best puppy dog eyes. I watched her melt under my gaze and grinned at her. “Thanks.”
I hurried in, listening for Kayla’s voice.
“Carlisle, tell me!”
That one. I opened the door and almost screamed myself when I saw what was on the screen.
“Are you shitting me?!” I stared in horror at the s screen. I knew what that was. How could she not? She was a girl for crying out loud!
“Jacob!” she jumped. The probe slid across her stomach but the image stayed there. “What are you doing here?”
“I heard you shouting,” I said, faintly, still staring at the screen.
“Jacob, could you stand outside please,” Carlisle said to me. “I need to explain things to Kayla.”
I nodded and backed out of the room. I closed the door and leaned against. How had this happened? I thought she would be careful? Didn’t she know that this would happen? Did he know it would happen?
I’d have to tell Sam. What would he do though? Could he do anything without hurting Kayla? We don’t need this, not when Mitchell could attack at any moment. One more person to protect.

Kayla’s POV

“Pregnant?!”
Carlisle nodded calmly while I began to freak out. Pregnant! How could I be pregnant? I was bedding a vampire! VAMPIRE! Vampires cannot get humans pregnant, it was completely impossible, it was-
Ever heard of the Incubus? A demon in male form that preys on sleeping females. It is said to lie upon their sleeping victims in order to have sex with them. Sometimes they do it just to father children.
I’d never paid much attention to the stories of Incubi. They were ridiculous, lies told by cheating women to explain to her husband why she was pregnant when he’d been away on business for a year. Now they didn’t seem so fake.
But if they were true, why hadn’t Edward told me? Why had he opted for sperm donors when he could get me pregnant all by himself?
Well, not many vampires had the restraint necessary to have sex with a human and not kill her.
I was pregnant. But what did it mean? What did it involve?
“Judging from the size of the foetus,” Carilsle looked at the screen. “You’re about eight weeks pregnant.”
“Eight weeks?” I couldn’t be. I hadn’t been sleeping with anyone before Edward and Edward and I had sex the first time two weeks ago.
“From your reaction I guess that can’t be true.”
I shook my head. “Edward was my first and we didn’t have sex until our wedding night.”
“Accelerated growth,” Carlisle murmured and then he pressed a button on the machine. I looked down at my stomach. There was a baby in there. A real baby. A baby that wasn’t going to survive to be born. A tear escaped my eye as I touched my little bump. I couldn’t let this little thing die. No matter what was going on with it, how it was 2 months old when it shouldn’t be. A little half vampire baby.
“We should call Edward,” Carlisle said, handing me a picture. It was the scan of my baby.
I shook my head.
“No,” I said, staring at my baby. “Wait until Mitchell is gone. It’ll be worse for him if he has to worry about our baby too.”
Carlisle smiled.
“You’re sure you will not be killed by Mitchell?”
“Of course,” I said and I stroked my bump. “Do you think I am going to let him kill my baby?”
Carlisle grabbed some tissue and wiped the gel off my stomach. I pulled my top down and sat up properly.
“How do you plan to kill Mitchell?” Carlisle asked. “I thought you weren’t the killing type?”
“I’m not,” I told him honestly. “I have absolutely no idea how to kill him. I just know that giving up my life won’t protect everyone. If I let Mitchell kill me, I’m murdering my unborn baby. I don’t want that. So either someone else kills him or I do.”
“Maternal instinct already.”
“Please, Carlisle,” I looked up at my father-in-law, begging with him. “Don’t tell anyone. Not even Esme. Tell no one. Think nothing around Edward. I don’t want him to know just yet.”
“He’s the father,” Carlisle said, looking uneasy. “I don’t want to lie to him.”
“You’ve had centuries to perfect lying,” I said. “I have to learn in fifteen minutes. I’m a terrible liar.”
I hopped off the bed and opened the door. Jacob was standing there, looking very confused and pained.
“Thanks, Carlisle,” I said, taking Jacob’s hand and dragging him away. “I’ll see you later.”
Leading Jacob away, I began to think of how I could actually go through with this. Being a mother had plagued my mind for weeks. I wanted to be a mum. I wanted a baby. But the baby growing inside me now wasn’t the baby I had planned on. A half vampire baby who probably wanted a bottle full of blood not milk. But that didn’t change the overwhelming love I felt whenever I thought about my baby.
