I continued to walk. But the warmth was persistent, and it took me a second to realize it wasn't my imagination. I turned around to find Bella staring back, tears flowing down her cheeks. I took my hand back and started to leave.
"Edward, wait," Bella whispered. I heard many months of sadness break her voice and my heart. I turned around again.
"I don't love Jacob. I felt he needed some comfort. I kissed him, but I didn't feel anything. Edward, please, come back," she cried. She fell to her knees. I bent over and picked her up effortlessly. She cried into my shirt, and I felt warm tears as they soaked the fabric.
"Shh... Bella... Shh..." I shushed her, cradling her like a baby.
Jacob entered the hall. He ran up to me, and growled.
"What did you do to her?" he demanded. Then, before I could say anything, he took Bella from my arms. Bella struggled.
"Let go of me, Jacob! He did nothing to me!" she yelled. Jacob held her tighter when she began to tip out of his arms. Bella.
"Jacob, give her to me. She told me you needed comfort, so she kissed you. She wants me," I growled. Nobody touches my Bella.
"Is this true?" Jacob asked her. Bella nodded.
Jacob placed her gently back into my arms, and brushed against my shoulder as he went out the door.
"I can walk," Bella told me. I placed her down, but as soon as she took a step, she stumbled. I caught her and ran her up into my room. I placed her on my couch as I changed my shirt. I could feel her eyes on me as I crossed the room to put on a tearless shirt. I walked to her and she got up to meet me. Her heart was fluttering. I held her close, and when I breathed out, her eyelids fluttered, like she was taking in my scent. When they opened completely, I saw in them happiness. But there was something else. Hunger. The same thing I felt. I satisfied both of our needs by leaning in to kiss her.
Bella, as usual, gasped and wrapped her arms around my neck, trying uselessly to keep me kissing her. For the first time, I didn't stop her. I craved this moment for months, just like Alice craves shopping every hour. More than that. More than craving the blood of the human I had in my arms right now. There was no describing the pain I felt. But I did feel it lift away as Bella's heartbeats grew faster and disjointed. I pulled away to let her breathe, placing my ear to her heart.
"You don't know how much I missed you, Bella," I said.
"Nor do you know the same for me," she answered breathlessly.
"Actually, I do. I have been spying on you."
Bella gasped.
"The Volvos..."
"Yes."
"After my dream..."
"Naturally."
"And the rustle in the trees... It was you?"
"I never wanted to leave."
"You saw the kiss..."
Bella's heart thudded in my ear. I pulled back up to see her looking uncertain.
"It wasn't your fault," I said.
"It was. I kissed him back."
"Of course. He healed you."
"No. He didn't."
"Explain."
"I felt like there was a hole in my chest. Jacob would keep it together for a short while, but when he's gone, the pain would come back."
"It seemed to be the same way for me, too."
"Edward, what did you... do while you were gone?"
"Pretty much died."
"No, did you meet anyone?"
Why would Bella ask something like that?
"Well, Tanya took in another female for her clan in Denali, but that's all."
Bella's face fell. Was that what she was expecting? Another female? Hadn't I told her at one point she was the only one for me? Then it dawned on me.
"What did Victoria tell you?" I asked.
"She said you and Jacob were dead," she responded. But it felt like she was only telling half of the truth.
"Bella-"
"Fine. She said you met a beautiful new girl in Denali, and you loved her."
I couldn't believe this. She actually believed this lie?! Then I realized, I had left, saying I didn't love her anymore. But even then, how could she still believe this lie, when I'm here, declaring I loved her ever since I met her?
