She stirred. Finally her eyes opened, I could see the ocean in her deep blue eyes. Crystal clear.
"Where am I,"she asked in a delicate soprano voice.
"General Hospital," I answered her.
"Who are you?"
"My name isn't important, but I'll tell you that my first name is Edward."
"Why am I here?"
"I found you nearly beaten to death in alley. I brought you here. Your right radius is broken in three places, but I think you'll be able to go home soon."
"Are you an angel?"
"Hardly," I couldn't let these words get to me, couldn't let them remind me of the one I lost.
"You're very handsome, and you're eyes are the most beautiful color of gold. Why did you stay. I mean, not to be rude, but you didn't have to stay with me."
"I wanted to. I wanted to make sure you were okay, I couldn't leave you like I found you. You looked so broken and fragile." Not to mention the way I feel, like there's some magnetic pull, like you're the center of the universe and I'm being pulled toward your gravitational center. I looked away from her penetrating eyes.
"Can you give me a number to call," I asked but she just looked at me like I was crazy and I reheard what I just asked and knew it sounded like a pick-up line,"so I can call your closet relative so they know you're in the hospital."
She looked down,"I don't have a closest relative. I'm an orphan and I don't have foster parents anymore."
"I'm so sorry, I didn't realize. I'm sorry."
"Don't be, the reason I was in the alley was because of them. My parents were druggies and both of them overdosed when I was 13. The stupid idiots. They owed some powerful drug-lord thousands of dollars and now I have to pay for it. The drug-lord is making me literally pay $956,247 for all the drugs my parents stole from him. But there is no way I can afford that.
"That was why I was in the alleyway. I was talking with one of his croonies, giving him some of what my parents owed, but he wasn't just after the money, he kept hitting on me, but I turned him down and that is when he started beating me."
"I'm so sorry, I should've gotten there faster, I could've. I heard your scream, but I just walked, I didn't run."
"Don't worry about it, at least I'm okay."
Just then the doctor walked into the room.
"You're awake, well let me check your vitals and we'll see how much longer you have to stay here."
"Cool."
I sat as still as a statue, waiting for the doctor to finish.
"Looks like you should be able to go home tomorrow. I'll be back later tonight to check on you again."
I exhaled in relief, I didn't realize I was holding my breath. I read what the doctor was thinking and growled. I couldn't believe he could think like that about a girl that was a quarter of his age. I glared at him.
He just looked at me like I was crazy.
"Are you her boyfriend," the doctor asked. From my peripherals I saw her blush.
"No, I'm just a friend."
He looked from her to me and then walked swiftly out of the room.
"Do you want me to stay," I asked her.
"You don't have to if you don't want to."
Then the nurse walked in with more pain meds. She injected them into her tubes. Then walked back out without a second glance.
She started to fall asleep. Her last thought was of me.
