Twilight Series Question

Jacob & Bella confusion!

This has nothing to do with the love triangle or anything like that -
In New moon, Bella and Jacob have this thing where they have made up ages for one another. In the event that one does something clever or right or whatever, more years are added to that age. I don't understand how this works & I don't understand the purpose of it either.
Could some please explain for me? Thanks.

The purpose of it is that Bella said "Blah blah blah, something about being young," so Jake was like "Technically with the brains and my gifts im older by like 4 years." So they kept adding up all their talents together, too a certain age.
