It's a recognition of a soulmate, or the best person to continue the wolf line with. It happens whenever the imprinter first sees the imprintee after having become a werewolf (if they'd known each other before then, he wouldn't imprint until he was a wolf). When the wolf imprints, the imprintee becomes the most important person in his life. All other relationships and connections become meaningless in comparison, and its as if the wolf is held on earth by the imprintee instead of gravity. In most cases, it's love at first sight. Imprinting can also occur if the imprintee's a child, though, and in those cases the wolf becomes a protector first, almost like an older brother, then a best friend and then it becomes romantic when she's an adult.
