Can vampires EAT?

Okay, just a little conflict. Correct me because I'm confused.

I've read something--a comment, maybe--that says VAMPIRES can EAT, but food don't do anything about their bodies, so they don't EAT. This is that commentator says:
'Edward swallowed a huge bite of pizza' something something.

Now, my side. This is in NEW MOON book page 399. Charlie and Alice were eating. And Bella thought this:
'I wondered where Alice was hiding the food.'

Hiding. The. Food. What now? Do vampires EAT or NOT?

Yes, vampires CAN eat. But they don't like to, blood being their natural and prefered food source but they will and can eat food to keep up pretenses. But like I said, they don't like normal food.

Lol, anyway they can physically eat it, but there body doesn't digest it and they end up having to spit it up latter. Doesn't that sound pleasant? Oh and human food tastes and smells awful to them, or as they put it like eating dirt. So the only reason they would eat at all would be to blend in and seem human. :)
