If Bella/ Edward had died...

I always wondered about this-

In breaking dawn, in the battle with the volturi, if bella had died, would edward have followed her into "the next life" leaving renesmee without both her parents?
And vice versa, if edward had died, would bella have followed him, or stayed with her daughter?

i know many people would like to think either one wouldve stayed with renesmee but truthfully would they?
