He loved Katherine for 145 years (mostly obsession/desperation for someone to love him) then fell for Elena cuz of her kind heart & believing in him. Its more selfless & complete. He loves her to the point of wanting her happiness before his own. IMO thats true love. So basically, I just dont c anything beyond Damon loving Elena, but theres still more seasons to come (tho itd be hard to make it believable if he developed feelings for another). posted over a year ago.

Hope that at least, you're talking about the books, considering that in the TV show they don't give a crap about the other and barely interact. I think that if he ended up without being with Elena, he would be alone. He will always love Elena. She didn't change him, she made him feel again. Damon seems a kind of person, but he's totally different. He's not a bad person. He's deeply introvert with his feelings, he doesn't trust almost anybody, he hates to feel because he thinks it's not in his nature and is scared to. Well, Elena did what NO ONE have ever done or is going to do: She trusted him. She gave to him a chance, didn't treat him like shit or "a monster, that has to be stopped". She understood his actions in some ways and she cares about him like no one probably do..maybe just Rose did that deeply (but more in a friendship way, they really cared about each other, supported and understood the other). And he's very loyal to the woman he loves. Just think about Katherine, he loved her for 145 years and his heart for 145 years belonged to her. He complitely stopped to love her because finally he understood how manipulative, self-centric and bitch she is. But with Elena is a different story..she's loyal too, she's genuine and good. So why he has to stop love her? Like I said, this won't ever happen. So please Bamon fans, don't say that he OF COURSE will end up with your Bonnie, because at least for now not at all. And I personaly think never. You can think that just if they'll maybe have something in a faaar faaar future, but right now they almost don't know the other.
