BUT Nina is awesome too. I think those who support Ian support Nina too and vise versa. But Ian is a guy. And most of us are girls. It's normal that we choose the guy.....

Like MariLena16 said the majority of the fans are girls so they will pick Ian over Nina simply because he is a guy but they also have other reasons to love him. Let's not forget than Damon is very appealing to the male audience too.

Damon always have the best lines, He makes the smartest plans, he rips hearts out, he drinks human blood, he compels people, he's not afraid to kill. Unlike the other characters, he is a real vampire! While Elena is great too, she's not badass like Damon.

I think there is more then one factor that makes Ian the most popular actor on the show.

I love them both! I have seen Nina in more movies and tv shows then Ian, but I think he is amazing in The Vampire Diaries.
