I don't think Candice's acting has "massively improved." I think she was always a really good actress. The thing that changed was the character. Caroline has grown up so much more and was able to express a whole new range of emotions. So, she may have gotten better, but I think the characterization allowed us to see more of her acting. I ADORED Matt and Caroline together. I was a little sad when Tyler got in between them. But, now I adore her with Tyler. As for Damon, I think the same thing goes as I said about Candice's acting. Season 1 Damon is the same as the current Damon. Only difference is we're seeing another side of him. I loved wild and reckless Damon, but in order for him to stay in town he had to cut back on his tendencies. Plus, I love seeing him as the big brother that he used to be.
Oh, and I've always loved Jeremy! He gets quite a bit of hate (probably because he's not a character in the novel). He also has grown. Really all the characters have. That's one of the reasons this is such a great show.

The changes Caroline went through helped us see how much Candice has improved.
Kevin Williamson said it best, as an actress she was green at the start of S1 and as the seasons went through she became mor mature as an actress.

I have nothing against DE. I don't ship them but I can still appreciate the beauty of their relationship. And there are moments that I love the vulnerable side of Damon but if I'm being honest, I miss the reckless, spur of the moment, sarcastic, fun Damon from season 1. I know that he's still the same person and we still get glimpses of that old vampire once in a while but I miss it on a regular basis. I just feel like he's too "soft" now.

I have always loved Candice's acting :) but I do agree; she has improved tremendously. It's a lot more "believable" now and not so cheesy (even though that's what makes Caroline's character).

Jeremy is one of my favorites but he isn't my absolute favorite. I couldn't stand him the first half of season 1 but now I really love him and TVD would not be the same without him.

The only one I don't agree with is the Matt/Caroline one. I actually ship Maroline (as well as Forwood and Klaroline, because Caroline has so much chemistry with everyone) and I loved how cute their relationship was :) Even though they had a lot of "rocky patches", I think that made them stronger and made them more likable.

He was the best character...until he met and fell in love Elena...yeah, Elena can make boring pretty much everything.
Also agree with Caroline & Matt.
