‘Vampire Diaries’ Director Shares His Favorite Delena Moment With Us And We Can’t Stop Crying
Let\'s take a somber walk down memory lane.
“The Vampire Diaries” has given us plenty of epic romances over the years, but none have come close to the magnetic pull that Elena Gilbert has to Damon Salvatore.
Delena has been a slow burn since season one, and nobody knows that more than “Vampire Diaries” director Joshua Butler. The unofficial captain of the ship, Butler has been on #TeamDelena since the beginning. (He directed his first episode, “A Few Good Men,” way back in season one.) And yes, he was just as devastated by the news Nina Dobrev was departing the series at the end of season six as you were.
Having directed some of the most memorable Delena moments in the show’s history — which may even include Delena’s last make-out sesh
in the season six episode “A Bird in a Gilded Cage” — we asked Butler to break down his all-time favorite OTP moment. Because Dobrev’s last episode of “The Vampire Diaries” may put a stake in Damon and Elena’s romance, and we need a little happiness right now.
“From my own body of work, my favorite moment is the end of ’What Lies Beneath,\'” Butler said. “Again, I found the song, which I love so much, the Kerli song ’Chemical’ and created the scene around the song, which I love doing. To be able to design the shot the way that we did… the camera just zooms in, dolly, zooms in, just right as Damon grabs Elena and kisses her and says, ’I had a really crappy day and I needed it.’ Something about that scene with the way the music works, the way it builds up and the way Ian [Somerhalder] played it and the way he’s looking at her… Everything about that was just a Delena moment.”
“A lot of people look at the end of ’True Lies,’ which is probably my second favorite, with The Plumb’s song ’Don’t Deserve You’ and that was a pure moment of just love, and it was fun,” he added. “But I don’t know, there was something about the power of that crappy day moment.”
“I think my favorite Nina moment was in ’True Lies,\'” said Butler. “There’s so many good Katherine scenes in there, but the scene where she’s in the forest, it’s with Jeremy and Matt and she’s just talking about how pissed off that she is that she has a cold and just the fact that you could end up this immortal creature that has to sit by a campfire and just be sick, there’s something about that endeared me to Katherine in a lot of ways.”
“In terms of performance, Nina’s just so incredibly amazing,” he said. “You know what is it for me? It’s in ’Do Not Go Gentle.’ I cry every time even though I was there — I cried on set! It was ridiculous; I was a mess. We did the scene where Nina was saying goodbye to Alaric and then leads him out to the vigil. That scene with Nina and Matt Davis is just, it just gets me. I think that’s an example of one of hundreds of scenes in the whole series where Nina is just so emotionally on point and just delivers. It shows why Nina is such an amazing actress and somebody who just is the soul of the series.”
