Chapter 1:
December 1
Dear Diary,

I had a feeling that something terrible was going to happen today.
I don’t know why I wrote that. It’s outrageous. I have no reason to be upset, but every reason to be happy, but here I am at 4:30 in the afternoon, scared. But that doesn’t explain why I feel so lost.
I didn’t know how today would play out, because right now everything looks strange to me, as if I don't belong here. But it’s me that's out of place though. And the worst thing is that I feel there's somewhere I do belong, but I just can't find it. I don’t know how coming back would solve all my problems, though I think it could. Walking into Mystic falls was nerve racking, but yet it pulled me in even more, like rope tied to my waist and someone pulling on the other end, dragging me.
I stood outside of their house, staring, like it was a part of history I hadn’t discovered yet, beautiful, peaceful but torn up with memories, scared from history. It was my Auntie and Uncles house; they had lived in that house basically since forever, with their two kids Elena and Jeremy. I hadn’t been back since their death, mostly because I thought it would be too hard to face Jeremy and Elena, since I had soulless parents, they weren’t the same when they found out. The house though, was still that bright pale white and deep dark blue, like nothing had happened. I didn’t know how I was going to tell them, I know I was putting my feeling behind a wall, trying to protect them, because they had lost so much, but I didn’t know how they would react, their parents, now mine, gone. I couldn’t go into the house, not yet anyway.

Madison Gilbert looked at the page she had just scribbled on, her hand trembling with more information exploding at the tip of her pen, but she place the pen down on the old oak table. She closed her diary, her fingers creasing the velvet lime green cover. She glanced over at the unique shaped glass, the rays from the lamps light, that sat in the middle of the table, made the water sparkle. Madison noticed her reflection in the spring water, her face was enchanting, as her olive skin glowed in the low light, her hair was a dazzling dark brown with maroon red highlights, she had it pulled up into a lose pony tail, she was short for a 17 year old, but she had a slim build, but what everyone noticed was her eyes, deep sea blue with grass green speckles, they drew people in. Madison glimpsed up to see a young man looking down upon her, his wavy golden blonde hair swayed around his face, his eyes a glowing brown. He looked at her, like he knew her but they hadn’t seen each other for years, then his face lite up.
“Madison, Madison Gilbert is that you” His voice, honey soft, he was surprised to see her.
“Yeah” Her voice hidden, as she looked up at him puzzled.
“It’s me Matt, Matt Donovan. Elena’s best friend” He said smiling, while handing her a menu. She sat back in her chair, as she started putting the pieces together.
“Oh hey, how you been” Her voice coming out of its shell.
“I’ve been good, how are you? Are you staying in Mystic Falls?” He pulled the seat from the other side of the table out and sat down. His broad shoulders sat perfectly across the top of the chair.
“I’m good, I hope to stay for awhile” She smiled, as she looked back at the dazzling water, the light dancing like a ballerina, twirling on her tippy toes across the silky water. They talked for awhile, catching up on each other’s lives, laughing and giggling like two little kids.
“Well I think Elena and Jeremy would love that, I mean if you stay” He said, getting up from the table, pushing his chair in. Madison handed him back the menu, as she grabbed her bag.
“They don’t know your here yet, do they” Matt said cheekily, as She giggled.
“No, not yet” Madison looked down at the ground, suddenly shame washing over her.
“Maddie, I know you haven’t come since, well since everything happened three years ago, but they will be so happy to see you” Madison looked up at him from under her lashes, as he looked at her with his hand on her shoulder.
“Trust me” she smiled, as he smiled with her.
“Thanks Matt, you were always that guy that knew how to cheer a person up” He laughed, looking down at the ground, his hands in his pockets, and looking back at her under his lashes.
“Yip, I was always that guy” He looked around, as his nervous levels raised.
“So, you work here” Madison said, cutting the nervous tension that was, now back her into a corner.
“Yeah, I have been working here since, about a month after my sister left town” He said walking towards the door, Madison following him. Matt was really close to his sister Vicki, mostly because Vicki needed him, but he needed her more, she just didn’t realise that. Madison and Vicki, when they were little were like sisters, but then Vicki turned against Madison, like a demon had taken over her body. Everyone had always wondered what had happened between them, sometimes Madison wished they could still be friends, but it just never happened, though she could still feel their friendship fired up inside of her.
“Vicki left, since when” She was now on his heels, surprise that no one had said anything to her.
“About 2 years ago” They stopped by the door.
“Matt I’m sorry, but hey it was nice talking to you” She looked at him, her eyes full of sorrow.
“See you around, Maddie” She watched, as he walked off to wipe down an empty table.
Madison pressed the palm of her hand against the wooden door of the Mystic Grill, walking into the sun shine of Mystic Falls.
She felt eyes staring at her, piercing into her. As she looked into the distance, she saw a crow sitting on top of the town’s memorial stature, which is placed in the middle of a little park across the road from all the shops. The crow though, it was the biggest crow Madison had ever seen before, chubby and sleek, with rainbows glistening in its black feathers. She saw every detail of the crow clearly, the selfish dark claws, the piercing beak, the single glowing black eye, but his eyes were on her, something she couldn’t escape from. Suddenly she was falling to the ground; a strong hand grasped her wrist before she could fall any closer to the pavement. They looked at each other, their eyes connected. The young man that had knocked Madison off her feet had short velvety black hair, a sold build, his eyes a dark chocolate brown with russet light brown speckles.
“Madison” his voice husky, as he looked amazed to see her.
“Tyler, Tyler Lockwood” Her eye brows raised, as he helped her to her feet, the distance between them hadn’t changed.
“What are you doing back in Mystic Falls” he asked, his eyes waiting for a hopeful answer.
Tyler had always liked Madison, whenever she would come to Mystic Falls he would always want to be around her, playing games with her, as they got older he fell instantly in love with her, but she wasn’t sure what she wanted. They shared their first kiss together before her Auntie and Uncle died, but she never came back to town until now. Tyler hoped to see her again, hoping that she would come back to be with him.
“I’ve come back to live, with Elena and Jeremy” she smiled, as she looked back at the memorial, the crow, gone.
“Oh, awesome” he sounded disappointed, and she knew that.
“See you round, Tyler” He stood there with his hands in his pockets, as he watched her walk off, his heart sinking, but guilt was settling into Madison’s heart.
Madison stood at the bottom of the stairs, leading up to the porch. She took a deep breath, before stepping on the first step. When she made it to the top of the stairs, she glanced over to her left; the swing chair was still there. She use to watch Miranda and Grayson cuddling, the stars thrown across the blackened night sky. As Madison came back to reality, her hands started trembling with nervous tension. She balled her hand into a fist and knocked three times, a few seconds later the door opened.
“Hey” Madison said, smiling, relief was pouring off of her. Elena opened the door; her long dark chocolate brown hair lay perfectly down her back, swaying over her arms, her eyes that same dark brown colour. Jeremy within seconds, appeared at the door beside Elena, his short shaggy hair fell perfectly around his face, his light brown eyes lit up when he saw Madison.
They ran out of the house, surprised to see her, Madison’s bag flopped off her shoulder, as Elena and Jeremy embraced her in their arms.
“Your finally here” They both said, relief rolling off their voice.
“Yeah, I’m finally here” she whispered. They stepped back, letting their emotions settle down.
“Jenna’s dead” Elena cried.
“I know” Madison nodded. Elena cried into her hand. Madison embraced her in her arms, Jeremy joining in.
Jeremy took her bag inside; Madison looked back towards the road, noticing the crow, staring at her again, as he sat in the big old oak tree. Elena pulled her inside, as the door closed behind her, the crow was still there. The house looked the same, still bright and happy.
“Elena, can you take her up to her room, please” Alaric ordered. Alaric had had stayed around to look after Jeremy and Elena, when Jenna died. He was in love with her, but what happened in the past had come back to destroy him. He didn’t know that she loved him too, but she was mad that he hadn’t told her the truth, but what she also didn’t know was that the truth killed her. Elena took Madison’s hand, taking her bag off the floor and pulled her up the stairs. Madison ran her hand up the railing of the stairs hand rail, remembering when her and Jeremy would play secret agents, the stairs being there head courters. Elena would always be the princess in need of rescuing, though she never knew, mostly because they were secret agents. They came to the top of the stairs, Elena and Jeremy’s room were the first two you saw, then Jenna’s old room was beside Elena’s, Madison’s room was now beside Jeremy’s, all the rooms had an on suite, down stairs had a spare room and a bathroom with a toilet. They walked into Madison’s new room, her bed was an old fashion wooden double bed that sat against the main wall, with two old fashioned bed side tables, an old wooden wardrobe placed in the corner of her room, and she also had an old fashioned dressing table on the other side of the bedroom. The walls, a pale golden brown colour with one wall being a chocolate brown.
“Maddie, Maddie” Elena waved her hand in front of Madison’s face, pulling her out of her thoughts and into reality.
“Oh, um sorry” Elena giggled at her.
“I was wondering if you want to go for a walk” Elena asked sitting on the puffy bed, Madison took a deep breath, letting everything set.
“Yeah, let’s go for a walk” they took off out the front door, the breeze dancing around their hair, on the way Madison, saw out of the corner of her eye, the crow, that had followed her from the Mystic Grill to her new house. They entered the cemetery, fog low to the ground made it feel frightening, but they carried on. Elena took Madison to her parent’s grave. The fog started to get thicker as they reached Grayson and Miranda Gilberts grave. The flowers they had picked on the way, were beautiful, bright red roses floating in the middle of the perfectly white lilies, Madison place the flowers down across the bottom of the head stone, her fingers creasing their names that were stamped into the stone. They sat down on the gentle green grass, their backs leaning against a head stone.
“I can’t believe you’re finally here” Elena said, smiling the happiest smile Madison had ever seen.
“I should have come back a long time ago” Madison said looking away from Elena.
“Maddie, I know I wouldn’t have come back, if I was you, but you did”
“Elena I would have come back sooner, it was just that mum and dad, they were a mess, mum wouldn’t leave the house or talk, dad hated everything he was always angry, it was hard” Elena’s head dropped to the ground.
“I couldn’t imagine that, it would have been horrible, I’m sorry” Elena looked at her.
“You’re sorry, Elena you lost your parents, I couldn’t..... That would have been horrible, oh god I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that” tears were beginning to form on her eye lids.
“Maddie, listen, things happen, people die, it’s okay” Elena’s voice soothing Madison.
Madison got up from her spot on the ground; she sat down beside Elena, her head resting on Elena’s shoulder as they linked arms, their hands twisting into each other’s.
“Thanks, I’m glad I came back”
“So am I” Elena whispered.
Elena took Madison’s hand, leading her to Jenna’s headstone. When they had reached the grave, Madison fell to her knees.
“I wanted to believe that she wasn’t dead” Madison’s figures were tangled in the grass.
“I know, I use think she would be at home, in the kitchen, but she’s gone” Elena knelt down beside Madison. They stared at the ice cold head stone, Jenna’s name imprinted into the stone.
“Maddie, I could have stopped all of this, you know” Madison looked up at Elena.
“What do you mean” Madison, now wanting to know what Elena is hiding.
“You know those journals your dad had”
“The ones about vampires” Madison said, still confused.
“Yeah, those ones, well I think there could have been something in there, something we missed” Madison started laughing.
“You can’t possible think vampires are real, can you?”
“Maddie they are real” Elena’s voice, had Madison almost convinced, though Madison already knew vampires were real because she had a secret of her own.
“What those journals had written in them, were written by some mental, crazy Gilbert” Madison got up from the ground, Elena followed.
“Maddie, I can prove it to you, just come with me” Elena put her hand out towards Madison; she hesitated but soon took Elena’s hand.
They went back to the house to get the car; Elena drove out to the old Salvatore boarding house. They pulled into the drive way, the sun light struggling against the darkness that loomed over the house. The old boarding house looked like it was an 1870’s Minchin, built from the first founder’s families. The tree’s grew protectively over the massive house, as the car grew closer up the drive way. At the end of the drive way stood an old water fountain, but it looked like there hadn’t be any water springing from the top of the fountain for a while. Elena pulled the car up to the side of the house near the tree line. They got out of the car, a cold breeze flew around Madison, and she instantly knew she shouldn’t have come.
“Elena, I don’t think we should be here” Madison’s voice, scared.
“It’s okay, just follow me” Elena’s voice calm.
They walked up to the old historic wooden door, Elena pushed the door opened and walked in.
“Stefan, are you home” Elena yelled out. Madison eyes widen.
“Stefan! Stefan Salvatore!” Madison whispered, but yelled.
“Yeah, wait how do you know his name” Elena now worried.
“I can’t believe you brought me to a killer, Elena” Madison still whispering, but yelling.
“A killer, Stefan isn’t a killer”
“He killed Jonathan Gilbert” Madison was about to walk out at that point.
“He’s different now, that was when he couldn’t control himself”
“I can’t deal with this, I got to go, I’m sorry” Madison walked back to the car, Elena followed her.
When they got back to the house, Madison had locked herself in her bedroom.
“Maddie, I’m sorry okay” Elena yelled from the other side of the door, then quickly pressed her ear against the door, listening for something, but she heard nothing. Jeremy walked past; looking puzzled at Elena, as she pressed her head and hand harder against the door.
“What are you doing” Jeremy asked.
“I stuffed up Jer” Elena fell to the floor; her back leaned against Madison’s bedroom door, as she hugged her knees.
“What do you mean you stuffed up?”
“I took her to see Stefan, she totally freaked out” Elena rested her head in her hands.
“Let me talk to her okay” Jeremy smiled, as he walked into his room, closing his door. He walked over to the window, pulling the latch, as he climbed out the window. He walked carefully from his window to hers. When Jeremy reached her window, he saw her lying on the floor, blowing a feather in the air. He knocked on her window, startling her. She opened the window, letting Jeremy come into her room.
“Maddie, are you okay” Jeremy ask, as Madison flopped on the bed.
“Jer, do you know why I’m here” Madison asked.
“Yeah, your here because you always come here in the summer” Jeremy was worried because it wasn’t summer at all, he didn’t know why she was here.
“My dad, gave me these journals about 4 years ago, I didn’t think that what was in them were true, I thought it was just another game my dad was playing to scare me, but then I found out that they were true” Jeremy leaned off Madison’s window seat, getting closer to her.
“About who?”
“Vampires” was all Madison said, but her voice was scared.
“Maddie this town is full of vampires” Her eyes widened, as she began to panic.
“Maddie, Maddie calm down” Jeremy sat on the floor with Madison attached to him.
“The vampires here, they protect us, they’re not like other vampires” She looked up at him, her face pale with red rings around her eyes, but her face looked dead.
“Why are you so scared of vampires, Maddie” She stood up, her body trembling.
“My mother’s dead Jer” Tears fell down her cheeks; she went and collected a small wooden box from under her wardrobe.
“What!” He yelled, but not loudly. Madison nodded.
“By Vampires” He asked. She walked back over to him, not answering him.
“Say hello to your Aunt Sara, Jer” Madison said, handing him the wooden box filled with her mother’s ashes. Jeremy put his arm around her, their tears dropping on the box.
