The Vampire Diaries TV Show Question

I thought Damon was supposed to hate Stefan?

I have only seen the first 2 episodes so bare with me here.
But in the first episode Damon spares Stefan... I thought he would have killed him (I mean he takes Stefans ring and gives it back) and the thing with telling Vickie that Stefan is a Vamp and then telling her that he's not...
Why didn't he kill Stefan or ruin him or whatever there and then? Or is there a big plan thing shown in later episodes??

no I don't think he's done with him,not even close,it's still the first season,there are a lot of things that'll happen,Damon loves Stefan,underneath it all
