The Vampire Diaries TV Show Question

I just rewatched 2x08 and there's something I don't get...

How was Elijah able to undagger himself? Isn't he supposed to be 'dead' when he's daggered, until someone undaggers him? In 2x08 he wakes up and then pulls the dagger out, but in other episodes someone needs to do it for him.
