I think Slade was truly the only one who could handle her. Everyone else thought she could be persuaded to a certain side, but Slade was the only one to ever realize that in order for her to choose a side you have to dangle something valuable in front of her that she wanted, and I think he enjoyed the challenge of doing so.

As underhanded as the "diamond to a tether" method was it worked for Ebony, since it finally got her to put down the walls she kept up to keep herself safe over the years.
