Growing up in La Push was odd. I always felt like I didn't belong. My older brother would never let me hang out with him. Even at a young age. He fit in perfect, he looked like everyone else. I stood out like a sore thumb when I was in town or at school. I begged my brother Sam to send me to a boarding school, away from this town. But he shot me down every time. I was sick of this small town, where everyone knows everyone. If you did one little thing that was wrong, the whole town looked down on you. It was aweful. People are waiting for me to mess up.
Everyone in town thought that he was perfect. My brother Sam Uley was a weird person. He spent late nights out. I never knew where he was. And when I needed him I could never find him. Sam wasn't a person I could count on. He was full of secrets and I knew none of them.
I heard Sam slam the front door and come running up the stairs.
Mato! Get up, you have school! Sam demanded out of breath.
My parents much have been drunk when they named me because I don't have a normal name like my brother.
Why are you out of breath? I asked.
Because I ran here to get you out of bed! He said angrily.
What's your problem? I asked.
Nothing, you are going to school today. I can't tell them you are sick every other day and than they see you around town. He growled.
It's not my fault I stand out like a sore thumb in this stupid place. I growled back.
This place isn't stupid, it's our home. Sam sighed.
Whatever. I mumbled.
Go to school and stay at school. I'll get Paul or Jared to pick you up after school is over. He said.
Why can't you pick me up? I asked.
Because I have some stuff to do around town. He said.
Fine, whatever. I mumbled.
This was stupid, my own brother couldn't pick me up from school. What was so important about doing something around town? Just because he was on the consul board for the town didn't mean he couldn't pick me up from school.
Hurry up, you're not going to make it! Sam said from the kitchen.
I'm trying to find something clean. Someone forgot to do the laundry! I screamed.
I put on some super skinny skins and black hoodie. I ran to the kitchen to where Paul was waiting for me with his motorcycle.
Oh great you're here. I said.
Paul was one of Sam's friends, he has a short temper and he can be mean.
Be nice, I am your ride to school. He said.
I would rather walk! I said.
Then go a head, you would make it by the time school let out. Paul laughed.
Guys be nice. Paul give her a ride to school for me. Sam said.
Fine. Paul said defeated.
I have a better idea. Why don't I just take myself to school by Paul's bike. I said.
No! No way are you taking my bike to your high school! Paul said.
Fine, but I am not wearing a helmit. I said.
Yes you are, you could get hurt. Sam said.
Then why bother getting on the thing? I asked.
Mato, stop complaining and just go to school and stay there unless you want Paul to stay at your school all day with you. Sam threaten.
NO! I'm going. Come on Paul. I demanded.
I hopped onto Paul's bike.
Get off, you are riding on the back. You can't drive. He said.
Gosh someone is bossy. I said.
Just get on and hold on tight. We have 10 minutes till your first class. He said.
I got back on the motorcycle and held on tight.
I looked at the speedometer on his bike, it was broken but I knew we were going really fast. Because the trees were passing by really fast and we were going arounds cars.
We got to the school and kids were staring as usual.
You have five minutes till class, hurry up. Paul said loud enough to hear over the enige.
I rolled my eyes and got off.
I'll be here at lunch time with your lunch money. Than I'll be here at three when school is over. He said.
Why don't I have any lunch money? I asked.
Sam forgot to give it to you. He said lying.
Sam didn't forget, we just didn't have any money for me to buy lunch.
Whatever. I said.
I planned on skipping before lunch so who cares if I get lunch or not.
I walked to my first class, we had a sub so I decided to get a pass so I could stick my stuff in my locker. Then I would ditch this place.
I got the pass and went to my locker. I put everything in there and than started to sneak off the school property.
I could sneak into the woods but Sam doesn't like me in the woods. Espicially after I told him my run in with the wolves. He said it was to dangerous for me to be in the woods by myself. As far as I knew there wasn't anything harmful in the woods. Besides the wolves won't hurt me if I just stand still.
I adventured into the woods until I saw one of the wolves. There was only three to the pack but these animals were huge. The wolf didn't see me so I ran out of the woods and back to the road. Walking down the road, I heard Billy Black's truck screaming up the road.
Mato what are you doing out of school? Harry Clearwater asked.
I um-
That's what we thought. Billy Black said.
Someone came up and grabbed my arm, it was Sam...
