Without Jam, the Office is still a really great show but it will not be the same. I believe Jim and Pam will be together at the end of the whole series...if they come together now, where can their relationship go? hopefully not down... :(

"guy jumping over a shark" picture signifies a concept in television called "jump the shark". It means basically the beginning of the end for a series. It originated from the show "Happy Days" when The Fonz literally jumped over a shark in that episode with his water skis. After that episode, the series writing went downhill and subsequently was canceled/series ended. In many shows in the past, there were JAM like situations where there was sexual tension between two of the main, greatly loved characters. When these two characters got together, many times it meant that the series will probably go downhill and end. Writers for shows are aware of this and they are wary of allowing such unions to happen quickly unless absolutely necessary or if they have a great way of getting out of it. In shows like Boy Meets World when Topanga and Cory finally got married, in Lois and Clark when Superman finally gets with Lois Lane, The Nanny, Mork and Mindy, Who's the Boss, etc, etc. the series ended soon after that great payoff. Modern writers know this historical trend and many have attempted to counter this as seen in say, "Friends (Ross+Rachel)" or Scrubs (JD+Eliot). I think that if JAM did happen, they'll break up and then come back together at the end (cliched though).

Well, many TV writing are done by geeks so I guess it takes one to know one. :D Look at early seasons of the Simpsons. Basically all nerds/geeks from Harvard (Harvard Lampoonists). Conan Obrien comes to mind as a super geek. He was a Harvard Lampoonist and he wrote for Simpsons, SNL, etc. Only reason I bring up Conan is because he is really good friends with Greg Daniels (exec producer and writer of The Office), a fellow Harvard grad. Greg Daniels also worked on Simpsons, King of the Hill, etc. All these guys know their TV history well, and are successful because they build on TV writing precedents.

I think that the writers will develop their relationship slowly. If they speed into it then it won't be interesting anymore. I really do hope they get together though.
