I mean, he still should have said something TO Michael since he basically wanted to take over his position, but I think it's better he did it this way knowing how Michael reacts to things.

Jim knows Michael extremely well. If he'd told him Michael couldn't keep the secret and he'd insist on helping and ultimately ruin Jim's chances. Well he did anyway so either way it wouldn't have worked lol.
