“That sounds nice. I’d love to have a new birth certificate with my new name but I think we’ll have to get my records from my previous schools in order for me to enroll at Sutton’s school. I need to tell Sutton about everything that happened as well as my name change since she is my twin sister. I know that Sutton will be happy for me.” Emma informed her parents.
Once Ted and Emma got home, they called Sutton for a family meeting and decided that Emma would be the one to tell her. “Sutton? I have some great news for you. Not only do Mom and Dad now have custody of me, we have decided that I am going to get a new birth certificate with my new name as well as our parents’ names on it listed as my parents. They told me that they were going to ask you whether or not you wanted to do that since we are twins.” Emma explained to Sutton.
“What will your name be from here on out, Em?” Sutton asked.
“Emma Alexandra Mercer. According to Mom, that was what my name should have been all along. She said that she had planned to tell Alec she had changed her mind about giving us up and had planned to not only keep us but also tell Dad about us.”
“I think I want to change the name on mine as well but I want to leave everything the same except have Mom’s name on mine as my mother. Mom and Dad love us both and deserve to have the two of us together. It just sucks that we can’t be the family we should’ve been all along.”
“Girls? I wouldn’t say never. While I’ve been going through this situation with your mother regarding Emma, my feelings for her have started to come back. I am almost divorced from Kristin and I think that I want to make it work with Rebecca, your mother. Everything happens for a reason. I just hope that your mom still feels the same way about wanting us to be a family.” Ted told his daughters.
“Of course, Ted. I’ve wanted that all along. I came back to Arizona because I wanted my family back which was you and the girls. I still love you and I love our daughters. Everything I did was in the hope that we would become a family. Emma? I have something for you which I gave to Sutton.”
“What is it?”
“It’s the other half of a heart. I told Sutton that it would symbolize our broken family coming together. I love both of you and your father. We were meant to be a family because I never stopped loving him and thinking about the two of you. My biggest regret is telling Alec instead of your father.”
