Because Ahaidi, Scar's father, also had a black mane. Scar inherited it. Mufasa has a red mane because he probably inherited it from his grandfather, Mohatu. Also, Disney thought giving Scar a black mane made him look more evil than a lighter one, although this is understandable, Disney made a mistake there, as in a lion pride, a dark mane is healthier than a paler one. Therefor Scar would have been king, but who cares XD

Scar has a black mane because in real life lions who are stronger have a darker mane.Scar has more power than Mufasa because he defeated Mufasa.
Because Scar's and Mufasa's father,Ahadi,had a black mane but a golden fur,and Scar's and Mufasa's mother,Uru,had a dark fur,just like Scars.She had ,,Outlanders nose"too.That's what makes Scar's colors to be like that:Ahadi's black mane and Uru's dark,outlanderish appearance and colors.
When they were first writing the movie, Scar was never going to related to Mufasa. He was going to be a rouge lion. They changed this, obviously, but kept the drawings. So instead they said that Mufasa's and Scar's father had black mane (in the story books). Genetically then it would be possible to have one son with black mane and the other with red.

Disney did not write those storybooks. Alex Simmons did. check out my answer for more details.
Yeah I too think it was firstly because Scar had to look obviously evil but in practical explanation I always took it obvious as well that his and Mufasa's father or someone else in the blood line had a dark mane too.
Mane color is just like eye colour or any other looks feature that is inherited generation to generation, more or less randomly.
I read somewhere that Scar was originally not going to be related to Mufasa, but they got the idea of them being brothers a while into preproduction, to make the storyline more intense. Unfortunately, I can't remember where I heard that from, so I can't confirm if it's from a reliable source. But if it is, that might be why they look so different; their character designs may have been finalized before it was decided that they'd be brothers.
Like I said, I don't know if this information is true, but if it is then that's my theory for now.
Of course, a biological reason could simply be because of how their parents looked, for all we know. Maybe Mufasa mostly took after one parent while Scar mostly took after the other. For example, their dad may have had a brown/red mane and their mother might have been an orange lioness whose father had a black mane. That'd be biologically possible.
Also, is it ever mentioned that they both had the same parents? I don't recall. Maybe they were only half brothers, for all we know.

that's an interesting idea! that could explain why Mufasa is king even though Scar has a black mane O_O
beacause due to science and nature the elder lions are supposed to have the black mane and the youngest red, brown,or orange, but due to the cartoon they wanted to make scar(taka)look more evil!so they agreed to make his mane dark and another meaning the name taka means dirt so they made him dark!
and here is a couple of vidieos for scars story and the meaning!

Oh for fucks sake that story is NOT official. >___<
A darker mane would obviously point out to a young audience that Scar is the main villian. It was created alongside his Scar to make him look more evil and scary . it's has another purpose as well. To represent the darkness in Scar's soul. Kovu's mane doesn't count because Kovu has brown mane. Not black. Also the reason why Scar's mane is black and Mufasa's is red is because originally Scar wasn't going to be related to Mufasa. Yet during pre production the filmmakers
decided that it would make a better storyline if Scar was related to Mufasa. Also fun fact: Disney's lion king series are based on Shakespearean plays. Lion king/Hamlet and Lion king 2 simba's pride/ Romeo and Juliet.
lion king Six new adventures is fan fiction series created by Alex Simmons. Who is an outsider of Disney. Alex claimed that the books took place between the events of the lion king and the lion king 2 simba's pride. Yet the Lion guard renders Kion the second child of Simba and Nala. Kiara is also confirmed to be fluffy and the firstborn of Simba and Nala. Rendering this statement untrue. Kiara and Kion are Disney made. Kopa, Ahadi, Uru and others are not. Making them unofficial. Also Uru doesn't have a mane. She's a lioness. You may be referring to tail tip or fur tone. Scar and Mufasa have no official parents until further notice.
Scar's mane is black because he is more powerful and because when he kills Mufasa he becomes king.In real life its said that the darker a lion's mane is,the more power he has.It is not true that Scar's mane color makes him an evil lion.People are just misunderstanding him to be evil because he has a black mane.
I never saw the whole thing but wasn't one of the cubs in the second LK movie his coloring, or had some kind of relation to him??
Though you don't usually see a lion with a black mane, they do vary in shades between prides. This happens a lot in the REAL animal kingdom, usually a trait passed down through the males, same way some Siberian Tigers turn out white while others in the same litter come out orange.

In the second movie Kovu is scares adopted son and looks just like him, very true :)
Kovu does not look like Scar. Kovu's mane is brown while Scar's is black. Kovu's fur is auburn while Scar's is reddish orange. Kovu's eyes are emerald green yet Scar's eyes are bright green. Kovu is Scar's chosen heir and adopted son. but he looks nothing like him.
Because he's the villian and has to be more "dark" you know xD
But in fact, in real life, the more dark the mane of the male lion is, the more strong it is xD
Mufasa and Scar's whose real name was actually Taka both were sons of Ahadi and Uru. Ahadi was a large lion with more of the colorings as Mufasa. The lioness Uru however was more colored like Scar. So that is why they look so different but are still brothers.
Uru,Scar and mufasa's mothers fur was dark like scar. And Ahadi, mufasa and scar's fathers fur was yellow-ish and his mane was black
But it was also to give scar an evil look
I think Simba was a little rascist. but Disney wasn't in lion king 2 simba's pride Kovu was actually a good guy. all of them were except Zira. She Scar's possible queen.
to make scar more evil and because black is a evil colour and evan though mufasa and scar are brothers it shows who has good intenshions and who dose not also scar take the mane colour off his dad and mufasa well its like you can have 2 brown hair people that have a blond kid so i think mufasa was just born like it
I think when Disney made the characters for the "Lion King" I guess they also planned out their personalities and so they gave Scar a black mane because in the Lion King movies he has a dark soul. Mufasa was a very kind and respectful lion and so his red like mane means he is a all of those great features.
Well, I think that Scar has a black mane, so that it would make sense in the later movies because Nuka also has a black mane. This feature shows that they are related.
lol ya, TLK wet through 2 other revisions before the final outcome, as much as I would like to say because Ahadi had on, or it makes him seem more evil, I gotta go with this^.
Yeah, Scar and Mufasa's father had a black mane and a golden body and their mother, Uru had a red tail tip and dark fur. So Scar has his father's mane and mother's pelt. Mufasa has father's pelt and mothers hair color. But, I guess being the darker colored brother made Scar look more evil too.
Scar's color seems to make him look evil. Scar's colors were a black mane, a brownish, reddish and orangish fur plus green eyes. But then, Kovu had his colors as a dark brown mane, and a brown fur and green eyes. Then Scar's outland nose. But even though they are different, they still look the same. I guess, to show that Scar is on the bad side.
Scars mane is black because of Ahadi, his father, had a black mane and Uru was a brown lioness so that concluded why he is a brown lion with a black mane
Scar as a black mane because his dad Ahadi had a black mane and looked a lot like scare did and Mufasa some how developed a orange mane so it is a genetic thing really.
Mufasa and scars father, Ahadi, had a long, black mane. Mufasa and scars mother uru, was like scars coulor but had more of the facial features as mufasa. Ahadi had the same facial features as scar. Why mufasa and scars noses and manes are different, was most likely because the two cubs had more genes in them from one of their parents.
because scars mother was outlander or his father was and the one who was the outlander had black hair, and mufasa's mother and father were both pridelander? and simba has red hair because his mixture with his father and mother sarabi and mufasa
Because Ahadi, Scar's father had black hair. Because Uru, his mother had brown fur, it can be inferred that if Uru was male, she'd have a red mane. I even made a punnett square for this.
All lion cubs get their looks from their parents. Mufasa and Scar's parents were Ahadi and Uru. Scar got his colour from Uru, and black men from Ahadi. Mufasa got his colour from Ahadi, and to make him good looking, his creators made his mane red, or, Uru's mane(if she was a male) must be red, and Simba got his red manes from Mufasa.
The darker the mane is on the lion
The stronger the lion is. So when a lion
gets strong it grows black hair/fur to show
other lions "Don't mess with me or you'll
get hurt"
Disney is meant for a minor audience, so to make it obvious to them, Scar has a dark mane to verify he is evil. But, Mufasa has a lighter mane verifying he's a protagonist, while it is genetically unlikely for the recessive gene to take place instead of the dominant gene. Mufasa and Scar's parents had dark manes, leaving a mysterious recessive gene to take over. But it wouldn't matter anyway, because Disney, along with Nickelodean and Cartoon Network, aren't usually quite accurate.
I really want to that Scar resembles an Asiatic lion because his mane is darker, smaller, and what l've researched his pride is slightly smaller. Also though he is usually on his own and his pride is mostly female. So it seems that Scar is an Asiatic lion, but it makes sense that Disney wanted him to seem more evil like.
You guys are going way to into this lol it's just a kids movie they didnt care much about being accurate on real life lions . I'm pretty sure they just wanted scar to look the "evil" part and dark color seems more evil. Geez people .
because, the darker the mane of a lion, the more trauma the lion has experienced. the lionesses prefer darker maned males because they have survived through that trauma, therefor being stronger. scar has that scar over his eye, so his mane grew darker. he may have excperianced more, non visible trauma along the way.
I think its because scar has his fathers mane but Mufasa have his fathers skin color and mufasas red mane is from his grandfather or maybe if uru was a male she would have red mane and scar have urus skincolor kind of.
Because Scar was originally going to be unrelated to Mufasa and he was going to be a rouge lion, but they changed Scar from him being a rouge to him being Mufasa's brother.
My theory of why Scar has a black mane is because his mother had a black tail.
