I am going to start this review by saying how disappointed I was Damian and Cameron were not paired together at all for "pairability". Damian said it himself- THEY ARE THE PERFECT PAIR! They even high-fived when they saw the week's theme on the board. I want them to duet so badly.
Homework Assignment
This week's theme, duh, is Pairability, which as Darren says is not really a word but it means they're singing duets! You heard right- Darren Criss is back as guest mentor. (Why does he get to come back for two weeks, I wonder? Oh, because he's freaking Harry Potter, that's why.) So the contestants are singing "Need You Now" and it seems kind of awkward, particularly for poor straight Matheus paired with Alex, because they're paired up and supposed to get intimate with each other. Except for Damian and Hannah- apparently they didn't get that memo. Their performance was very "light" and Darren said it didn't really fit in with the intensity of the rest of the performances. The other pairs were Cameron/Marissa and Samuel/Lindsay. Darren's top two were Marissa and Samuel but Marissa surprised him the most because she didn't stick out last time so she won the challenge. Since she won, she gets to pick her partner! Cameron thinks "the stars are aligned" for him and he has no doubt she'll pick him since they had such a connection. So Marissa leads him on, saying that she's fallen in love with him and then she walks over to Samuel, gets down on one knee, and says, "Will you be my partner?"
....
OUCH. That's gotta burn, buddy.
Shooting the Music Video
There are FOUR music videos this time, each featuring a pair. The pairs are:
1. Samuel & Marissa (obviously). They're doing a music video for "Don't You Want Me", where Marissa looks amazingly and unfairly gorgeous as always and Samuel looks cool, as always. Eric tells Marissa to kiss Samuel at the end- She seems nervous about it but apparently there was nothing to be nervous about because Sam seemed to really dig it. He got right into it- way to roll with the punches, Sam. Oh, and Damian was just glaring up a storm at the screen when they kissed. We all know you wish that could have been you, Damo.
2. Damian & Matheus. They're doing "Lady is a Tramp". Damian is clearly more comfortable with big band than Matheus. In the recording studio, Matheus does all these Adam Lambert-like vocal runs like he's trying to show Damian up or something. Swing, bro. Their performance was kind of awkward in that Matheus is about crotch-level with Damian and Damian is having to constantly bend down to lessen the height difference. And then Alex and Matheus have a high note competition and poor Damian is stuck in the middle covering his ears.
3. Cameron & Lindsay singing "Baby, It's Cold Outside". All goes well until... *gasp* Lindsay plants a big one right on Cam's mouth. And once again the show makes her out to be the bitch because she apparently did it with no regard to him or his feelings and purely for the win. Nope, she was directed to do it, guys, and so was Cam. But Cameron feels like he pulled a Tiger Woods and calls his mom. Apparently he didn't realize that Glee may involve ACTING every now and then, which may mean a kiss or two. Sorry, Cam, love you mate but you should have realized that when you signed up for this.
4. Hannah & Alex sang "Nowadays" from Chicago. Alex dressed in drag. I don't really have anything else to say about it.
The Bottom 3 (or 6)
Marissa and Samuel are called back but they're the ONLY ones called back. That's right. Everyone else has to perform in their original pairs. Unrelated: I love Damian's expressions when they're about to give him his song. He looks like he's praying for a song he actually knows. lawl.
1. Hannah & Alex. They did a really fun and cute performance of "Valerie" and Ryan Murphy loved it. He said that they're both people who theoretically shouldn't be stars but are capable of being stars. He's also obsessed with Alex in drag.
2. Damian & Matheus They got the song "These Boots are Made for Walking" and as soon as I heard the song choice I just thought "oh, dear" and rightly so. They came out wearing tucked in cowboy-ish shirts and rain boots.
....
I can't really assess this performance because I was too busy covering my face in my hands. But the judges' facial expressions were priceless. Apparently the song is about adultery.
3. Cameron & Lindsay sang "River Deep, Mountain High". They sound great together but Lindsay was just belting out her notes like there was no tomorrow and I could barely even hear poor Cameron. I know you want to show off for Ryan, Lindsay, but a duet is not the place for that. Then Ryan called Cameron out for crying about the kiss and running to his mama. Cameron responds with "I'm a Christian" and Ryan likes that. He wants a Christian character.
Ryan chose the bottom 3 this time and he picked Cameron (because he was overshadowed by that darn Lindsay), Matheus (for not being sexy and confident enough- I don't know why Ryan Murphy is obsessed with sexing him up; I feel much more comfortable when he has his clothes on), and Alex (for being a diva and putting Matheus down). Alex gives an empty apology to Matheus, saying, "If I hurt you in anyway I am generally sorry." Uh, I think you mean genuinely, pal. Clearly, Alex doesn't think he did anything wrong because he doesn't even know what he's sorry for. But Alex stays and Matheus is sent home after failing to show more self-confidence.
