I decided I'm going to start reviewing the episodes because I'm bored. I tried my hardest to be non-biased. Didn't work out too well.
The Homework Assignment
This week's theme for The Glee Project is "dance ability" and starts off with a performance of "Hey Soul Sister" for none other than Harry Shum Jr. Are the contestants feigning surprise or what? Who did they THINK would be the guest mentor for dance ability week? And why they chose "Hey Soul Sister" for a dance number does not make sense to me but some of the contestants were able to work it. "Best dancer here" Alex had a unique way of working it by doing a some sluggish pirouetting. There were some other interesting dance moves in the background, including Matheus doing a one-legged hop across the dance floor and Damian doing God knows what. In the end, Samuel won because he was "cool and confident".
Shooting the Video
What do you know, self-proclaimed rapper "MC Hannah" turns out to ACTUALLY be a good rapper. Well, at least the best of the bunch. She's got a "skadoosh" thing going on, which I'm pretty sure I've heard in Kung Fu Panda. Anyway, Samuel steals "her" thing and uses it in his recording and "claims" it's his. (I have a feeling this part was a tad scripted, because honestly, who could possibly think something like "ruby doop doo skadoosh" is original? It sounds like something you'd hear Jack Black say or from a guy on the streets with a coin jar.)
Well anyway, it looks like Lindsay's free from all the hate at least for a little while because Samuel comes off as the ska-douche for this episode. Until... wait for it... Matheus asks for a bottle of water and had a mini-freakout when asked to stay in one spot. Op, DIVO ALERT! I think the judges overreacted just a tad when they called him off for his "huge meltdown". He did snap at Damian though, which is NOT COOL.
The Bottom 3
So Damian, probably the worst dancer, actually manages to pull some moves out of his ass and Alex, who only 30 minutes prior had said, "This is going to be a great week for me," ends up in the bottom three, along with Matheus the divo and McKynleigh the no-personality country girl.
McKynleigh gives a somewhat cheesy but fun performance of "Last Name", taking one last look at that ring that somehow ended up on her finger before the song ends. Ryan Murphy led her on, saying she really let her personality come through and how he's always wanted a girl who could sing country and she could be that girl.
Matheus sang "Down", which is really not a good song for his voice, but when you take into account the nasally-ness of it, really no song is. Before his performance, Ryan Murphy told him to "go nuts". Matheus took this to mean "take off your shirt and put on a strip show". It was extremely uncomfortable and I could tell I wasn't the only one cringing in my seat. Zach was covering his face with his hand and looking away. I'm with you there, Zach.
Alex surprised me with his performance of "I Will Always Love You" because he actually sang and didn't just yell his lungs out. When he was done, Ryan Murphy asked him why Alex would supposedly throw the homework assignment and he says he wants to "give other people a chance to shine". Thankfully, Ryan Murphy calls off his cocky attempt at being humble by saying, "You think you're better than them?" Alex doesn't really know what to say. Then he gives a very moving speech about how hard it is to be gay and how only his mother knows (guess what, now the whole world does) and how hard it is to be accepted. Uhm. This is the 21st century. Gay marriage is being legalized in several places and Glee practically thrusts homosexuality in your face.
McKynleigh ended up going home, which proved to me that the last chance performances don't matter at all and they're simply rooting out contenders who they never really wanted in the first place.
Ironically enough, I think McKynleigh's performance of "Keep Holding On" was the best performance she's given all season.
