1) imperfections that separate them from typically "heroic" characters (selfishness, ignorance, bigotry, etc.)
2) lack of positive qualities such as "courage, physical prowess and generally feel helpless in a world over which they have no control".
3)qualities normally belonging to villains (amorality, greed, violent tendencies, etc.) that may be tempered with more human, identifiable traits (confusion, self-hatred, etc.)
4)noble motives pursued by bending or breaking the law in the belief that "the ends justify the means."
Ben on the other hand is character I love to hate. I wanted him to die soooooo many times! But at the same time I know that show wouldn't be so intresting without him ;p
I've gotta say for sure Dex! Totally an anti-hero - he rocks! House next but as to who fits it more, yeh I think it's Dex.
Saywer I think is just more of a rough around the edges hero :)
Ben URGH nope i've gotta just go with selfish villain who thinks he's a hero.
Balter!? lol I dunno he's not an anti-hero is he? Maybe there's a case for that in like the last ep but still I dunno mmmm...
He's a serial killer for God's sake! HE KILLS PEOPLE AND WE STILL ROOT FOR HIM, freaking deranged that we do but whatever....
He's amazing and a total scene stealer regardless of what paranoid/crazy/brilliantly poignant situation he's gotten himself into. I also love how it was he who ended up finally growing a backbone and saved the day in the finale.
While all the others are amazing, I don't think there's anyone else who captures every single spectrum of the 'morally gray' criteria as he does. He's incredible.
