Sony/ATV signs Tegan and Sara to co-publishing deal
Sony/ATV has signed a worldwide co-publishing deal with Canadian duo Tegan and Sara.
The agreement covers all seven of the sisters’ studio album releases and will also take in songs from their next album, which they are expected to begin writing early next year.
Tegan and Sara’s most recent album Heartthrob has been their most successful to date, having debuted at No.3 on the Billboard 200 in the US and reached No.1 on both the Top Alternative Albums and Top Rock Albums charts. It peaked at No.2 in Canada, where it also spawned three Top 40 hits at radio. Lead single Closer, produced by Greg Kurstin, was a Top 40 hit in the US and also reached No.1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Songs chart. The single has been certified gold in the US and platinum in Canada.
Sony/ATV Senior creative director Tyler Childs said: “Tegan and Sara are two of the premiere songwriters and iconic artists of the past decade. We’re so excited to dive into their extensive catalogue and collaborate on future co-writing opportunities. I look forward to working side-by-side with the girls, Piers and Nick for many years to come.”
Tegan and Sara said: “We’re very excited to be joining the Sony/ATV family, and we’re pleased to have our seven-album catalog united under one global roof. As we continue to deliver Tegan and Sara albums, we also intend to expand our unique songwriting brand with co-writes and toplines for other artists.”
Amelia Artists co-founder and MD Piers Henwood, who co-manages the duo with Nick Blasko, said: “Having self-administrated Tegan and Sara’s publishing company from our management office over the past few album cycles, we had a clear set of expectations for what we wanted in a global partner. Sony/ATV was able to check all these boxes, and we\'re excited to have a passionate staff there to help steward and grow Tegan and Sara’s songwriting legacy.”
At the 2014 Juno Awards (the Canadian Grammy equivalent) Tegan and Sara\'s Hearthrob was awarded Pop Album of the Year and Closer was named Single of the Year. Tegan and Sara were also recognised as Group of the Year. Since the album’s release the duo have won a brand new audience after teaming up with American comedy group The Lonely Island for Everything Is Awesome, which featured in The Lego Movie and became a Top 20 hit single in the UK.
Tegan and Sara have just finished a North American tour supporting Katy Perry and will complete the final leg of their own Let’s Make Things Physical Tour in November.
Tegan and Sara Quin have been writing songs together since they were 15, eventually signing to Neil Young’s label Vapor Records, which released their first full studio set This Business Of Art in 2000.
Their 2004 album So Jealous represented a commercial breakthrough for the sisters as it sold more than 300,000 copies worldwide and was nominated in the Alternative Album of the Year category at the Juno Awards. It included the hit Walking With A Ghost, which was later covered by The White Stripes, as well as numerous songs that were featured in Grey’s Anatomy.
Follow-up album The Con reached No.11 on Billboard’s Top Alternative Albums chart, while being the first of three consecutive top five albums in their native Canada. It was succeeded by 2009’s Sainthood, which became an Alternative Top 10 album in the States and was shortlisted as album of the year for the prestigious Polaris Prize, the Canadian equivalent of the Mercury Prize.
Besides penning songs for their own releases, the pair together or individually have also written with and for a diverse range of other acts, including Tiesto, David Guetta, Morgan Page, RAC, and Lisa Loeb.
