My artist told me to keep it out of direct sunlight for almost two months, but I don't know what your artist told you. If you do have to get it in direct sunlight you should put sunscreen on it. The sun makes the ink fade really really badly

It should not be exposed to sun while it is healing (2 - 4 wks), until it feels like regular skin, and does not hurt when you bump it.
After it is completely and totally healed, you can go in the sun with high SPF sunblock (no less than 50 SPF)
Do not use sunblock while it is healing because it will pull the color out.
If you do not do this, it will fade. There is nothing worse for a tattoo, than the sun.
