Switzerland Question

Long question about the swiss german.

When I went to Switzerland I couldn't understand what they were saying, even though I speak German. I know the dialect is very different but are the words different too? I was hoping that some of you Swiss guys could tell me :)

well all I know is that some things are shorter like "Ich Liebe Dich" (I love you in German) becomes "I Lieb Di" (not sure if I spell it the right way, it's just how I remember my friends from St.Gallen saying it) in Swiss German. But of course every place his it's different nuances and if you spend some time with a particular group you will end up understanding them (I'm Dutch and could figure it out after a while), but don't ask me to talk Swiss German because I wouldn't know how to...
