On the surface i think Sam comes across as the more caring "purer" winchester but deep down Dean seems to have this child like innocence about him - and this has nothing to do with the demon blood or Sam being one of YED's children. It's just Sam seems abit more....darker in general than Dean.
Sam entertained the idea of killing the virgin (it was to save 30 people so you could argue it was the better (more just) thing to do if you wanted) but Dean was determind to find another way, killing her wasn't even an option he would consider. Also after Dean had talked to the female demon (can't remember her name!) he wanted Sam to let her go, but Sam killed her! =O Dean always tries to act harder though, like when it came to those vamps who don't drink human blood, at first Dean wanted to kill them, but when it came down to it and he saw they really didn't hurt people he refused to hurt them!
Dean will put his life on the line for literally anyone and i think deep down he just doesn't have the same potential for hate or wrath or darkness that Sammy does!
I agree with you guys, SG1-090 and Allixox! Although Sam comes across as nicer, when you dig deeper, he really has a tendency to look down on people and a definite lust for revenge. He gave up trying to save Dean from hell after less than four months and instead went gunning for Lillith. This pick brings up a point I've been mulling over. Isn't it interesting that even though Sam seems nicer and is more polite, people seemed to connect to Dean more easily? I mean, you hardly ever see Bobby and Sam talking, really talking. And the pattern is repeated with temporary characters too. Most of them connect with Dean, not Sam. Just a thought.
