I've spent five months trying to figure out why the hell I love this show so much, considering that I usually don't like horror shows. But Supernatural has something special. The main theme of the show has nothing to do with horror. That's just a backdrop for a much broader love story.

If you clicked on this thinking, "Ooh, Wincest- kinky!" you're gonna be disappointed, cuz that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the relationship these two boys- these two highly devoted brothers- have with each other. They love each other, they really do. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13, KJV. This is the perfect description of Sam and Dean and their love for each other.

The Trickster made a very good point in Mystery Spot. The boys do have an obsession with saving each other, giving their lives to do so. But that's one of the biggest reasons why I love them. Sam and Dean have two major fears in common: 1) the fear of having to live without his brother; and 2) the fear of his brother living without him. The second fear is stronger in Dean than it is in Sam, since Dean has practically raised Sammy his whole life and knows that Sam needs him to keep going. Just look at what happened to Sam between No Rest for the Wicked and Lazarus Rising. He got hooked on demon blood, laid the demon bich Ruby, and believed every freakin' word she told him- and all because Dean was gone and Sam couldn't handle being alone.

Even in life, the boys couldn't handle being apart. Dean said that was why he came to get Sam at Stanford. He needed for them to be a family again. Even when the boys fight and split up (Scarecrow, When the Levee Breaks), eventually one of them (usually Dean; Sam's too proud) will call the other and find some way to work in a grudging apology. Then the other one, filled with remorse and riddled with guilt (usually Sam) comes back just in the nick of time to pull his brother's butt out of the fire.

One last thing: no offense to Casgirls- I love him, too!- but I do think Cas interfered with the Sam and Dean relationship. That was probably the only thing I didn't like about Cas. Eventually, he did find his place, and Sam and Dean were able to try to start repairing their broken relationship. Cas even became like a third brother for them. Nonetheless, Sam and Dean will always be the true brothers, and their unconventional love story will last even beyond death.
Love that lasts even beyond death.
Love that lasts even beyond death.
