Hey y'all! I don't know about you but personally, I'm signing adoption forms anytime I see Jack, so you can imagine how upset I was when I saw the end of 14x06. Like, giving Jack tuberculosis is NOT what we're gonna do here.
But seriously, why IS Jack sick? If you missed the first few episodes of season 14 here's a recap. Jack has been coughing up blood for the past few episodes. In the most recent episode 14x06/Optimism (a fantastic episode, btw) he seems mostly fine up until the final scene. He has a pleasant conversation with Dean about love and how its a crazy thing when he starts coughing like Hell. Jack looks at his hand and sees it's covered in blood. A moment later he passes out, and I scream. It's left unclear for how long he's been coughing, or why. The why is what this is about. I have a few theories, so here they are!
Note: This is gonna be chock full of spoilers for the finale of season 13 and most of season 14 up until this point. Also, today's episode is the 300th and I believe it's from the POV of the townspeople, but if I ever get proved wrong in any future episode, well at least I had fun!
Here we go!
Theory One: It's Lucifer Again
Now I'm going to preface this and say that this is sort of two theories in one. You'll see what I mean later.
I'm assuming you've seen season 13, but here's a basic recap: In the penultimate episode, Lucifer is left in the hands of AU!Michael, and the Winchesters take a (large) group of people into their universe. Of course this doesn't go well, and in the finale Lucifer and Michael find their way back. Lucifer doesn't have any of his own, so he steals Jack's grace before zapping him, Jack and Sam out to a church. He tries to make them fight to the death, but Dean/Michael comes and saves the day blah blah blah, we'll get to this later.
The main point here being that Lucifer stole Jack's grace. Lucifer is killed in the end of the episode, and in the beginning of season 14 we see that Nick, his vessel, is still alive. Bullshit, yeah, but what are you expecting from this show. I'm gonna bullshit as well here and say that maybe it was also Jack's grace, combined with what little archangel grace Lucifer had left. And if Nick survived... maybe that means Lucifer survived as well.
I don't like it either, trust me.
But where is Lucifer? Well, we've seen flashes of him through Nick... if you count brutally murdering your neighbor over incorrectly remembering an incident a minor flash. Of course, this could be PTSD from being possessed/tortured by Lucifer. But I think (aka I know- this show isn't as unpredictable as it thinks it is) that Lucifer is also somehow alive and is just not powerful enough to overpower Nick again. It's a reverse of the past situation, so now Nick is mainly in command while Lucifer tries to fight his way back to the front and gain command again.
And now to the part about how this effects Jack.
As we know, Lucifer drained Jack of his grace. What if to try to gain back his power and take control of Nick again, Lucifer is still stealing Jack's grace. Jack is his son, after all, so maybe he could be able to channel it now that he's stolen most of it. The reason this is causing Jack to be sick is because Lucifer is taking hi grace quicker than he can regenerate it and it's taking a physical toll on his body.
Basically? It's Lucifer's fault again.
Theory Two: The Alternate Universe
In the finale, out of desperation, Dean allows Michael to posses him to help him save Jack and Sam, and 'kill' Lucifer. Michael ends up taking control of Dean and blasts off again, going out on a mission to take over this world.
So now, for roughly half a year, there has not only been a large group of people from another goddamn reality living in this one, but also a goth version of a lesbian who traveled to different realities in her sleep, and an archangel. That all should be creating a lot more issues with space-time, but this isn't Dr Who or Rick And Morty, this is Supernatural, so I'll let that slide.
Before Jack was even born, he was opening rifts into different universes. He has a connection to them that no one else does. They're literally woven into him, so the realities they lead to are as well. Before people started coming over and living in his universe, the rifts seem to have no effect on him. Technically, things were where they should have been. Now that we have so many humans as well as magical entities living and walking around, he's starting to have some problems. Things are not where they are supposed to be. Anyone from another universe is like a virus, and by being there it makes the body, or in this case the entire universe, unstable. When the universe is sick, Jack gets sick.
'But why didn't he get sick when the Winchesters and Friends were in the apocalypse world?' I can hear you asking. Well, my dear, there are two reasons for that.
One, we don't know how long Jack has been sick for. It's implied that it's been a little while, but not the full six months since Michael took off in Dean, so it's likely that it took a few months before all this caught up to him.
Two, that was not in his native universe. Jack was concieved and born in the universe we've always known and loved, and although he created portals to other realities, he was still naturally a part of this one. The other universes are connected to him only because he opened doorways to them. The instability of those universes would not effect him nearly as badly, if at all. The universe he is most connected to is the one he was born in. Besides, his connections to those other worlds may be cut off. To the best of my knowledge, there are very few rifts still open, if any. The one from the Wayward Sisters pilot may be, but it's heavily guarded. If the rifts are the source of the connection, then no rift means no connection.
Those are my two theories and.... 5 minutes before the episode :D If I am wrong, so be it, these were still fun to make. If I am right... hehe I win!
Either way if they kill of Jack I will not hesitate to fight someone.
