Why is there so many Sonic fans hating Mario?

I think it's because Mario and Sonic were created to be rival of each other, so who likes one of them usually don't like the other. They're also very different in many things. But the two are now shown to be good friends despite the rivalty, and I think their fans should do the same.

I like BOTH Mario and Sonic games. I started playing my first Sonic game back in 2006. I occasionally watch YouTube videos of Sonic games Let's Plays except Sonic Heroes.

It's because they know Mario and Sonic came out about the same time and people had problems thinking which one to put their quarter in.

I think it's because of how similar the games are.
I personally like Mario much more than Sonic. But Sonic is a CLOSE second.
Sonic is more of defeating Dr. Eggman.
Mario is to rescue Peach and defeat Bowser.
Mario has items to help along the way.
Sonic has spped boosters and items that help along the way to.
So i'm not to sure. There both to same really.

I love Sonic and Mario. I give them respect for what they do and all of their games. So one word. RESPECT.

Personally I like both Mario and Sonic, I feel the Sonic Fan Base can be a bit... energetic at times... which normally leads to rage and pointless arguments. I honestly don't know what pitting the two of them together is going to accomplish, I see Mario and Sonic as equals. Guys, can we not just end this pointless war already? For god's sake, If your going to have sonic fight somebody, mix it up a bit... why not sonic vs. the flash? That would seem a bit more interesting then that stale Nintendo vs. Sega war. Mario and Sonic are both equals, While I do like Mario more, I see them as equals.

How could this happen?!? And besides, Sonic is not the original mascot of Sega. It was Alex Kidd.

Usually it's the cause of mindless fandrones clinging to the Mario vs. Sonic wars back in the 90s that causes the problems. But regardless, Mario and Sonic are both awesome. :3

A a fan of both franchises and being a history buff, I think I can help you answer this.

You've probably heard of the art of rhetoric, which includes propaganda, sensationalism, and most importantly MARKETING. This is where a person or group uses facts, their own reputation, and emotional appeal in order to not only draw favor to an action or product, but also feel against the opposite action/product.

Here we see Nintendo and SEGA, two reputable companies of the time, standing at the top with products that directly competed with each other (platformers Mario and Sonic). And what else would they do but use rhetoric in television and magazines to create loyal customers? Many marketers from the time admit that Nintendo and SEGA's competition was remarkably vicious. The result was very loyal Mario or Sonic fans, swayed by the media to despise the competitor. Even when SEGA's hold on the market collapsed, the feelings continued, because these strong opinions now engraved in gamers' minds were passed down through role-modeling to younger siblings/cousins, friends, and future children. So this is why we have the Mario-Sonic problem.

Now that we are in a "Mario & Sonic era" a lot of this heat is withering away, but it still exists, and it probably will for a while.

Because we are jealous. Look at the quality of all the Sonic games vs Mario games.
Sure, each have their strengths and weaknesses from story, music, gameplay, etc.

But look at which games get better reviews. Mario. Also Sonic fans are constantly made fun of and mocked at by trolls on the internet and harsh critics, and they almost always bring up Mario as a comparison.

So yeah. To put it shortly, we are just jealous that Mario has everything we want.
