was the audience just friends?

Brian Holden was one of the writers of the musical. Brian Rosenthal is the actor who played Quirrel. And yea, getting a nice response from one of the StarKid guys was totally awesome =)

They are a group of friends from the musical theatre department of university of Michigan. (they have now graduated and started officially as Team Starkid productions in chicago) They put on the production of AVPM mainly for their friends and family, so I suppose most of the audience was friends etc. But when they made AVPS they had grown in popularity so many fans went to see it performed.
