Carrie Fisher - the actress best known for playing Princess Leia in Star Wars - has died, aged 60, after suffering a massive heart attack.

Her family\'s spokesman Simon Halls released a statement on behalf of her daughter Billie Lourd:

“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning (4.55pm UK time).

“She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”

Fisher suffered a massive heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles on Friday - when she reportedly went into cardiac arrest and was treated by passengers and flight crew who gave her CPR.

Stephen Fry left a touching message for Carrie Fisher.

He posted that the actress was the “kindest, cleverest and sweetest person” he’d ever met.

The star posted on Twitter that her heart was with Fisher’s family.

She said: “My heart goes out to Debbie Reynolds on the death of Carrie her talented daughter.

“There have been too many deaths this year”

The Star Trek actor William Shatner has tweeted his sadness at Carrie Fisher’s death.

He said: “I’m deeply saddened to learn of the death of Carrie Fisher.

“A wonderful talent & light has been extinguished.”

People are reacting with shock on social media at the news of Carrie Fisher’s death.

The actress fought for her life for four days since her heart attack on a United Airlines flight from London to Los Angeles on Friday.

She had reportedly been kept alive by a ventilator - and her mother Debbie Reynolds had given people hope she would pull through when she tweeted yesterday: “Carrie is in stable condition. If there is a change,we will share it. For all her fans & friends, I thank you for your prayers & good wishes.”
