Well, I think he is supposed to be.

You see, the show was originally supposed to be an adult's TV show (I was shocked when I found out) and the characters actually have this whole psychology to them.

But to answer your question, Patrick is supposed to be in love with Spongebob. Spongebob sees Patrick as a best friend, and is actually in love with Squidward. Squidward thinks Spongebob is annoying to no end, and he is in love with himself.

So yes, Spongebob is gay. But there's nothing wrong with that, is there? He's still Spongebob. There's nothing wrong with being gay. Spongebob is still made of awesomeness :D
