Chapter 5: Holding On
Clark super sped faster than he ever had down to the hospital. He couldn’t believe this was happening, everything had been so perfect and now, he felt as though his world was falling apart. As he pushed through the doors of the hospital nothing else mattered all he cared about was making sure Lois was okay. The woman on the phone didn’t give him any details other than it was serious and that he should come down right away. That made him really nervous he couldn’t imagine his life without her, even though its only been two months that they’ve been together, she meant more to him than he could ever imagine. When he walked into her hospital room and saw her lying on the bed completely still he felt his heart being ripped out of his chest. She looked so weak and frail and he couldn’t help but blame himself. She just lay there with her arms by her side as if she were paralyzed. Her skin had become so pale that it matched her off-white hospital gown. There was a large cut across her cheek and her head was wrapped with white gauze. He couldn’t stand seeing her like this, he kept having to remind himself that this was real and he had to stay strong for Lois but he felt himself breaking down. He felt a weight hanging on his shoulders, a sense of guilt. If I had just been there and stayed with her this wouldn’t have happened, he thought to himself. He sat on the side of her bed as he kissed her forehead. He felt powerless, he has saved so many people and yet he couldn’t save her. He picked up her hand and it sent a chill through his body.
“Lois I’m sorry. I can’t take seeing you like this when I know there’s nothing I can do.” He fought back the tears as he gripped her hand tighter. “You have to fight this, I know you can, you’re the strongest person I know. We’ve been through so much together and I can’t lose you now, I won’t. We have our whole lives together and I can’t picture mine without you by my side. I’ve finally realized what I want in the world and who I want to be, and it’s with you.” He couldn’t fight it anymore, the tears started to blur his vision. “I need you Lois, I need you. Please wake up, wake up Lois, wake up!” He was down on his knees, his head buried in his hands as he sobbed. He leaned forward and kissed her lips, all he wanted was to feel her lips press back against his.
“Mr. Kent?” The nurse slowly walked in with a clipboard held tightly against her chest. “I would like to discuss Mrs. Lane’s condition with you.”
“What happened to her?” He said frantically, never taking his eyes of Lois.
“She was in a car accident; she was hit by a drunk driver. Their car drove right into hers hitting her directly as she was driving through an intersection.” Clark could tell she was trying to be sympathetic, but it wasn’t helping. All he wanted to do was find that driver and get revenge for what he did.
“I don’t understand, what’s wrong with her?” His bowed his head down; he was in a state of shock, refusing to accept what had happened.
“She’s in a coma, and we don’t know when she’ll wake up, and that is if she wakes up at all. I’m sorry. Mr. Kent if there’s anything you need I’m right outside, feel free to stay as long as you please.” She gave him a sincere smile. “Oh and I almost forgot, the baby is doing fine so far.” She was happy to deliver some good news among the bad.
“The baby?” Clark took his eyes of Lois for the first time as he turned towards the nurse with more shock then before.
“Oh I apologize, she didn’t tell you?”
“I’m not sure she knew either.” He turned back to Lois but this time looking at her stomach imagining a baby growing inside her, their baby. And for the first time that night, he smiled. More tears followed as he placed his hand over where the baby would be.
“Did you hear the Lo? We’re having a baby! I didn’t think I’d ever be able to picture a mini Lois running around.” He let out a laugh through sobs. “You’ll make a great mom I know you will, so I just need you to wake up; I can’t do this on my own. I need you here with me; I promise I won’t ever leave your side for as long as I live. You don’t want our kid growing up wearing nothing but flannel do you?” he was trying so hard to lighten the mood but he still felt that aching in his heart.

1 week later
It was bright and early Tuesday morning as Clark walked into Lois’ room with his breakfast and a box. He sat down on the chair next to her bed and ate his bagel just like every other morning. He would go and sit with her everyday telling her absolutely everything and anything he could think of, he thought that maybe if she kept hearing his voice she’d eventually wake up. Once he was done his breakfast he picked up the box he had brought and placed it on her bed.
“I brought you some things to make you more comfortable.” He opened up the box and started pulling out the objects one by one. “I brought you one of my flannel shirts; I figured it would be a lot comfier than that gown you’ve been wearing and when you wear it you can always feel me near you even when I’m not.” He carefully lifted her up and placed his shirt over her shoulders. Seeing her with it on made him laugh, she always teased him about his flannel but he knew deep down she loved it. How he longed for one of her snarky comments, he missed them so much. “Next we have the whitesnake cd you made for me. I thought if ever you woke up and I wasn’t around at least you could wake up to something you loved. And I’ve heard that babies can hear things when in the womb, and I knew you’d want it to come out with good taste in music.” He smiled as he placed the cd in the CD player on her nightstand. As the music started to come out through the speakers he couldn’t help but feel a sense of comfort. He spent the rest of the morning pulling out the different things he brought and explaining to her why he did.
He slowly got up kissing her cheek before going to get some more coffee. He hated leaving her side, he couldn’t stand the thought of her waking up alone, but if he didn’t get more coffee he would fall asleep. Just as he was leaving the room he heard a soft familiar voice, a voice he had been waiting to hear for so long.
“Nobody is going to mess with Lois and Clark.” Her voice was weak and trailed off as the last words came out. She wanted so much to pull herself up and walk out of this place but she couldn’t. Her body felt so heavy and she felt so weak. Clark rushed by her side the tears streaming down his face. He stroked the side of her face as he leaned in and kissed her. And then she kissed him back, he’d wanted to feel her kiss for so long and now he could. He savored the moment with one long soft kiss before pulling away.
“Lois I’ve missed you so much! I’m so glad you’re awake!” He couldn’t even express his feelings in words. His heart was beating so fast he almost couldn’t breathe.
“Thanks for taking care of me Smallville.” She winced. It was hard for her to speak, but she forced the words out.
“You know I would do anything for you Lois.” He sat on the edge of her bed with her hand in between both of his. “There is so much we have to talk about but I think what’s best right now is that you rest. You’re health is more important than anything right now.” He smiled and she gave him a tired smile back. For the first time in the last week he had a feeling that everything was going to be okay.

A few days later
Lois was feeling much better and Clark decided it was time to tell her about the baby. She was sitting in her hospital bed as the sun beamed through the open window. There was a cool breeze that made her hair blow across her face.
“So what was it you wanted to tell me?” she smirked, very eager to find out what he’d been dying to tell her ever since she woke up. His ran his fingers through his hair as if contemplating whether or not he should tell her. He had planned on it today but now seeing her there, he was worried. What if she didn’t want to have a baby with him? Would she feel pressured to be with him? All these questions came across his mind and his brows furrowed. Lois could tell something was on his mind, something troubling. “Clark, what is it? You know you can tell me anything.” She said comfortingly as she placed her hand on his forearm.
“I know Lois. It’s just-“ He said as she quickly interrupted him.
“Just what? If were going to be together and make this work, there can’t be any secrets between us.” Her voice was more serious now but it still had that caring undertone that made him smile.
“I know I know. I just want to make sure you’re okay before I tell you.” He shifted nervously in his seat, he wasn’t sure why but he felt as though this baby was his fault, his responsibility. He wanted more than anything to have this baby with Lois but he didn’t want to have it with her not wanting to.
“Clark I’m fine, stop worrying about me! Whatever this is we can handle it, I mean common we’ve survived everything from comas to crazy psycho kidnappers. We can work through this, good or bad, we’re in this together.” Her reassuring words convinced him to finally tell her, he knew if he waited any longer it would just make matters worse.
“We’re-“ He was about to say it, tell her the truth, that they were going to have a baby together. But just as the last words were about to come out the nurse walked through the door.
“Ms. Lane, I’m glad to see you’re feeling much better!” She smiled, she had seen how devoted Clark had been to her over the past week and it made her happy to know that she was going to be okay.
“Yes thank you!” Lois smiled politely. She then noticed the nurse’s smile disappear and a nervous look came over. “What’s wrong?”
The nurse cautiously walked up to the bed. “It’s about your baby.”
