Chapter 3: Make a Wish

Clark was lying on the couch taking a quick nap when his phone rang. He checked the caller ID and it read "Chloe".
"Clark how many times do I have to call to remind you!?" Her voice sounding irritated on the other line.
"I’m sorry Chloe I had fallen asleep and completely lost track of time!" he replied even though he was a bit upset he got awoken from his dream....about Lois. But he couldn’t admit it to her, no, not yet. He could barely even admit to himself that he was dreaming about her...and loved every second. "What did you need me to do?"
"I was just reminding you to pick up the stuff I asked you to for Lois' birthday party"
“What time is it!?” He asked frantically, worried he wouldn’t have enough time to get everything ready before the party.
“It’s one, but the party is starting at six and I need you here an half an hour early to help set up!” she reminded him, a bit frustrated she had to constantly remind him of things.
“Okay I will be there I promise.” He smiled.
“That’s what I like about Clark Kent, he always pulls through no matter what.” She said with a sigh of relief as she hung up the phone.
He had just set his phone back down on the table as Lana walked in with a box of party decorations.
“Lana, thank you so much for picking those up for me, I was taking a nap and I lost track of time!” He said gratefully.
“Oh it was no problem, I saw you asleep on the couch and I didn’t want to wake you, so I went and picked them up myself.” She smiled as she leaned over and kissed Clark on the cheek.
“Before we go to the party we have to stop by the planet, my gift for Lois is there.”
“Okay that’s fine, we’ll get ready now and leave in about 20 minutes?” she asked, positive it wouldn’t take long to get ready; after all it WAS just Lois’ birthday party.
“Sounds good, I’ll try to hurry up then!” He replied hoping that would give him enough time to make sure he looked perfect!
Forty-five minutes past and Clark still getting ready.
“Are you almost done Clark? We have to go!” She growled, agitated it was taking this long for him to put something on. She walked into his bedroom to see him staring at himself in the mirror, making sure his shirt was completely buttoned and that his tie was perfectly in place.
“I’m ready.” He grinned.
“What has been taking so long anyways? I’m sure you looked perfectly fine 25 minutes ago.” She huffed.
“I just wanted to make sure I looked acceptable!” He answered still playing with his tie.
“Clark you look fine, can we just leave already!?” She snapped, she had never seen him care this much about his appearance, and she didn’t like it at all!

The drive to metropolis felt longer than ever. Lana was upset and he knew it. He just didn’t understand why she was mad, but whatever it was he was sure she’d be over it soon enough. All that mattered right now was making sure he could get Lois’ present and be at the Talon in time to help Chloe set up. Everything else could wait till after tonight. When had he become so infatuated with Lois that whatever was going on came second to her? He couldn’t quite wrap his head around these new feelings but he didn’t mind, he liked how it felt. They had finally arrived at the planet after what felt like days. There was still that thick silence that hung over them.
“Are you coming in?” He asked.
“Yes.” She replied with a strange tone in her voice, almost like jealousy. She wanted to see where he worked mainly so she could see how close it was to Lois. Thinking about all the time they spent together, endless hours sitting across from each other made her sick. She wasn’t quite sure why it did, she wasn’t the jealous-girlfriend type, and besides there wasn’t a reason for her to be jealous. Was there? Even if there wasn’t she couldn’t help but feel like something was going on and for the first time she was worried Clark would choose someone over her.

To both Clark and Lana’s surprise when they made it down to the bullpen they saw Lois sitting on her desk talking with Nate, one of their co-workers.
“So what are you doing tonight?” Nate asked as he leaned in closer to her.
“Are you asking me out?” She smirked.
“And what if I am? It’s not every day a guy like me gets a shot at going out with someone as beautiful as you.” He said confidently.
Clark couldn’t take listening to one more minute of this! Nate wasn’t even in her league! Lois deserves someone more worthy, someone special, someone like me. I could please her and take care of her while Nate would treat her like another one of his one night stands.
Lana saw the look in Clark’s eyes. They were filled with jealousy and outrage and that made her even madder. How could Lois of all people be the one taking him away from her? There was no way she would let him slip through her fingers.

“Lois, what are you doing here?” He asked in attempt to stop the conversation from going any further.
“Oh hey Smallville! I guess I could ask you the same thing!” She replied, very happy to see him there.
“Smallville.” Lana muttered to herself, she hated it when Lois called him that. Just the fact that she had a pet name for him made her want to smack that smirk of her face.
“I was actually here picking up your gift.” He smiled, flashing her those famous puppy dog eyes.
“For me? Do I get it now?” She clapped excitedly.
“No you have to wait ‘til tonight!” He told her as he walked over and pulled out the wrapped present from the top drawer of his desk.
“That’s just mean!” she teased as Lana rolled her eyes in disgust.
“So what are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be spending hours trying to find the perfect outfit for tonight?” He joked, knowing how long it takes her to get ready.
“Ha-ha, funny.” She said sarcastically.
“I’ll see you tonight Lois.” He smiled as he waved goodbye.
“Can’t wait!” she winked and waved back completely ignoring the fact that Lana was there.

It was just after six and everyone was at the Talon waiting for the Lois to arrive. The coffee shop was filled with balloons, banners and a long table in the middle where plates had already been set for dinner. Lois walked in wearing a tiny slim-fit black dress that made Clark jaw drop. All the guests hurried over to give Lois a hug and wish her a happy birthday, everyone but Clark and Lana. Once everyone had done so she walked up to Clark.
“You look great Clark.” She smiled looking him up and down. “It’s a nice change from all that flannel.” She teased.
“You look really beautiful Lois.” He said once again staring her down with his puppy dog eyes. Lana watched from across the room she couldn’t stand to watch this anymore. She walked up to Clark and pulled him away.
“I want to leave.” She said aggressively.
“Lana, don’t be ridiculous we just got here!” he said in disbelief.
“I’m serious; I don’t think I can handle a whole night with that big-boob-loud-mouth-slut.” She screamed unintentionally as everyone turned their gazes towards her joining Clark in disbelief. He was furious with her, there was no way he would let Lana treat her that way!
“LANA! How dare you say that about Lois!” He said angrily.
“I think you should leave.” Martha said to her with a firm tone. Lois was like a daughter to her and she wouldn’t let her get treated that way.
“That’s fine with me!” She replied as she stormed out the door.
“Happy birthday Lois, your wish just came true” Lois whispered to herself as she tried to hide her smile.

After about five minutes of awkward silence everyone sat down for dinner. Not long after the room was filled with chatter and laughter.
Clark’s eyes were fixed on Lois the entire time just watching her as she laughed. He loved her laugh, but what he admired most about Lois was the fact that she could just blow off what Lana had said. She didn’t dwell on it or cry but she moved on and decided to have fun instead, and Clark liked that about her.
Chloe caught Clark gazing at Lois as if nothing else existed and she smiled. He never looked at her that way and she knew that he really felt deeply about her. No matter what he said it was there, the connection, and from that moment she knew Lois and Clark were destined to be together.

The party was over and most of the people had already left. Chloe, Clark and Lois were the only ones left. Chloe was off cleaning up the mess and Lois was sitting alone at the table drinking the last of her wine.
“You forgot mine.” He smiled as he handed her his gift.
“Oh Clark, I’m so sorry I must’ve missed it!” She said apologetically as she took his gift into her hands.
“Go ahead, open it!” He said proudly. She gently pulled off the wrapping paper revealing a frame. Inside the frame was a handwritten piece of paper.
“Lois’ Rules of Reporting” She read as tears filled her eyes. “You remembered?” she asked as she slid her hand across the frame.
“How could I forget?” He replied as he placed his hand on her shoulder. His touch made her weak but strong at the same time. She looked up at him as he looked down at her, and he smiled. She stood up and let herself get lost in his eyes. He stepped closer, placing his hand on her cheek and kissed her.
