The First Test

Clark destroys the ship.Just a few months later, Clark received another cryptic message from Jor-El. He was to leave Smallville to begin his journey toward his destiny. Jor-El placed a mark on Clark's chest. He called it the mark of his ancestors. It would prove to be an instrument of control. Clark refused to go and destroyed the ship through which Jor-El was communicating. The destruction of the ship injured Clark's mother. Clark felt so badly that he ran away from home, so he ended up fulfilling Jor-El's demand anyway.
Clark's scar burns.While away from Smallville, Clark wore a red kryptonite ring which effectively released him from his inhibitions. From past experience, Clark knew that longer he wore the ring, the worse his behavior would become. Apparently, Jor-El knew that, too. Periodically, the mark, which Jor-El placed on Clark's chest, would burn painfully until he removed the ring.
Jonathan makes a deal with Jor-ElAfter a few months away from home, Jonathan went to Jor-El and asked him to help him bring Clark home. Jor-El indicated that Kal-El's first test is nearly complete, and it would be of no consequence if he returned to Smallville for the time being. [edit]
