Clark has had feelings for Lana for a long time. At the beginning of the series, Lana dated Whitney Fordman and wore a kryptonite necklace, preventing Clark from coming near her without feeling its effects. Throughout season one, Clark's feelings grew for her, and a tentative friendship blossomed. Lana continued to date Whitney however.

There was tension between Clark and Whitney, and noticing their friendship, Whitney suspected Clark's feelings for Lana. In the Pilot episode, Whitney and his friends make Clark the traditional freshman "scarecrow," because he sees Clark talking to Lana. Lana finds out about this but gets kidnapped and is saved by Whitney while Clark takes care of the kidnapper.


Clark & Lana have a few moments throughout the series, but nothing really major except from an almost kiss. When a boy called Ryan comes to Smallville, who has the power to hear people's thoughts tries to tell Clark what Lana thinks of him, but Clark says he doesn't want to know because he would rather find out himself. During the last few episodes Lana sees Clark & Chloe getting close and seems a bit jealous. At the end of the first season, Lana is trapped in a tornado after dropping Whitney off who leaves Smallville to join the Marines. As she is sucked in Clark enters the tornado.
