It could not have been too far for a grown up lion to run because a little cub can't wander on the desert for too long before the point of dying. And the night he ran away as a child probably burned into his mind very well.
Thus, I think he remembered basically which way to follow the sun in order to return, and even though he likely was a little lost in the direction (having aimlessly wandered as a cub), the way could not be that long, as in he'd pretty soon end up where he wants to be.
Also, there could've been however minor landmarks along the way. And if I'm not mistaken, cats have an amazing sense of direction, and I don't see how that would not apply to lions too.

from right where he was standing? He probably would have had to go back threw the jungle to get back.
