Born 6th January 1854, Holmes habits ,which several seem unearthly to us, were only natural in his time. (Not beating a dead corpse with a stick to see if it would bruise but you get the idea.) Smoking the drugs found in his apartment, was considered actually healthy in several parts of Britan in his childhood, even beyond his death, so his smoking is no surprise and has little do do with his childhood, save the fact that it tells us two things. #1. He said it "Helped him think". As we all know no one turns to weed to "Think" so he may have realized this effect on him after he had already tried it. Not as an escape, but more-likely as a form of relaxation, popular to the upper class in the nineteenth century. This leads us to our second deduction, his family, had enough money for him to acquire the drug as he reached the age.
As for what type of life, i shal quote sherlock himself from "The adventure of the Greek Interpiter.
"My ancestors were country squires, who appear to have led much the same life as is natural to their class. But, none the less, my turn that way is in my veins, and may have come with my grandmother, who was the sister of Vernet, the French artist. Art in the blood is liable to take the strangest forms."
This entails that he is an unlikely byproduct of his upbringing, and deduction can hardly be enough at our humble level, to deduce a working theory with this said.
His parents are never mentioned, however many have speculated. French blood is evident, but little else is revealed.
His brother Mycroft is mentioned as a biological brother, so its fairly safe based on his relationship, and shared interests, that he and holms, grew up together. If this is mentioned in the books, forgive me, Im no expert.
His distrust for women only is tied to his mother, if you belive the work of Sigmund Freud, to which lacked insight, and pose, "suiting facts to match hypothesis rather than vice versa.".
I truly have no idea what his childhood was like except these few...
He was no doubt self schooled, or similar, based on his esoteric knowledge. Knowing the exact imports of the Swiss, but not knowing the earth circled the sun. (until watson told him).
Two He was born an (oddball) so to speak, and looked upon it as a blessing; art even.
