Severus Snape & Lily Evans Question

Why did Lily change her mind about James?

She found it hard to like him at first and J.K. Rowling never really gave you any reason why she should have changed her mind. What do you think?

I think she changed her mind cuz of: her friendship with severus ended and that james himself had gotten over the bullying and that stage where he grew up abit and that maybe lilly saw something in james. who knows?

lilly doesnt strike me as the alone, sulky type cuz she doesnt let that stop her living life even when her friendship with severus ended like if severus spoke up about his feelings maybe lilly would have dated him or whatever...who knows?...but maybe lilly saw that james was really a nice, sensitive guy (when he wasnt jinxing snape tho)

I know this is going to upset some Lily fans -- it's not that I hate her; teenagers are complex, they make a lot of stupid mistakes. (Although I'm verrryy close to hating her. Makes me so mad. She needs to learn some forgiveness.)

I have a really hard time understanding her choice. I don't believe James ever "changed." The way Sirius acts around Snape (and otherwise) hints at that, in my opinion.

If I try very hard to step into her shoes and try and forget about my hatred for James, I still have a difficult time figuring her out. Lily is a confusing, fickle person. I think that her loss of friendship with Severus hurt her deeply. He was her best and only friend since she was a little girl. He introduced her into the world of magic, he changed her life. Lily is also very stubborn. I think she was determined not to let Severus off so easily, to make him pay for what he did. But it didn't work. He thought it was too late. A silly childhood grudge gone awry. Perhaps, even while she hated James, she started hanging out with him just to spite Snape, to make him jealous, because she knew they hated each other. As she spent more and more time with him, he began to grow on her. Maybe she, in her desperation for a friend, or pain and longing for Severus, she began to overlook James' weak points. Perhaps, being a young, easily lovesick teenager, she saw James' sense of adventure, his leadership among his peers, his reckless, "devil-may-care" nature as attractive, as so many young girls have done before, and simply developed a wild crush on him. Or perhaps she just changed her mind. I can't stand the man, but maybe they both just had a change of heart. Or, stepping back into my own shoes, they were both arrogant fools and were just made for one another. I prefer to believe that she sought him out in her pain. She probably tried to force herself into forgetting about Severus, and in thus, blindly fell for James. I'm not saying that she didn't really love Potter, because I'm sure he must have grown on her after a while, but I don't think it started out that way. She reached out for him to deafen herself to Snape, because she really didn't want their friendship to end, but she believed it had to.

I think too in the books it said that in one of their last yrs, James straightend up around Lily to win her, and it worked. When she was around he didn't behave like a total Ass, however behind her back, he was still the comple Bastard as before, especially to Severus. That's why Lily changed her mind, because she saw what James wanted her to see.

i think its so sad about snape, everyone thinks Serius and Lupin and dicks to him because snape is the 'bad guy' but in the end its actually them who are the mean hateful ones, yes snape is a bit of a dick towards them but they gave him shit for most of his school life, and after all he was heartbroken, that can make you bitter. i feel sorry for him

Serius explained that James eventually grew out of his immaturaty, and I guess she gave him a chance...? I don't really know; I wish J.K. shouldv'e elaborated on that. Now, everyone looks at Snape as the good guy (which I think was J.K.'s intention) and James as the bad guy (which wasn't her intention).

The only real answer is probably he matured. Stopped bullying, stopped asking her out all the time, and eventually she saw all the good things he was, not just the bad things she had come to expect.
