Why a red flag is used as a symbol of revolution?

(i dunno about the others) in the russian revolution and french revolution, the "rebels" used red flags because the red was the colour of the socialism and comunism

I think that it's used because of it represented the blood of their partners that died in wars.... I'm not sure
