In my opinion, everyone should cycle everywhere. Besides, there are over 9 million bicycles in Beijing and plenty all around the world. I'm sure there will be enough to go around. If you are planning a longer journey, use public transport. By cycling, people will lead a less sedentary lifestyle and consequently lose weight eliminating the issue of obesity therefore there will be fewer cases of diabetes, heart disease, and whatever other illnesses are caused by excess, unnecessary fat essentially. This will reduce the pressure on the NHS and so money can be spent elsewhere. It will also hopefully influence people to eat less as exercise tends to diminish hunger and as people will sweat they will drink more water (people tend to mistake thirst for hunger and eat when they just need to re-hydrate). So less food will be consumed meaning our food consumption should end up being more equally spread around the globe and hopefully this will also result in less transport of food and so carbon emissions and all the other pollutants will decrease (as with the reduction in using personal vehicles by cycling instead).
People may argue that cycling will use up more resources. I highly doubt it. I mean a lot of the world's population is situated in urban areas where we don't need to travel that much so not everyone needs bikes anyway, I suppose, which means that we don't need to build many bicycles anyway. As for cycle tracks, the laws should be changed so cyclists have a better right of way and cycling should be made safer so that it is not illegal to not wear a helmet because I think a lot of people are put off by having to wear one. Workplaces should be more cyclist friendly and ensure they have changing rooms and lockers. If everyone cycled then traffic would be reduced anyway making it safer. There should be a higher tax on cars to ensure cycling gets it's way + it's obvious that cars are not the way forward. Electric cars still need fuel to actually transform energy into electrical energy so they aren't that much better than the cars we have now which means the current level of mining and transportation of fuels will not be changed much.
