Pokémon Question

About Pikachu...Hmmm...?

How did Pikachu get his claim to fame as the main critter of Pokemon? I mean, when the Pokemon games first came out (specifically Pokemon Red and Green versions), he wasn't even one of the starters. He was one of the wild Pokemon that can be caught in the game but I don't see how that makes him any different from the other wild Pokemon.
He appears as Ash's Pokemon companion in the anime (which confused me--after that, a Pikachu edition aka "Pokemon Yellow" came out soon after!) Just wondering ...how did Pikachu get all that reputation?

*Note, from what I've searched, the Pokemon anime came BEFORE Pokemon Yellow, but it just leads to the same thing I'm asking, anyway...
