Sam Heughan and Tobias Menzies talk duel fallout.
Full spoilers for Outlander\'s Season 2 episode "Best Laid Schemes..." continue below.
With Jamie (Sam Heughan) arrested and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) beginning to lose her baby, the Frasers are in about has bad a situation as they\'ve ever been.
But while their love for one another has always been the thing that bound them together, Jamie breaking his promise to Claire about dueling Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) -- and her subsequently starting to miscarry their child -- is a pretty big hurdle to overcome.
"It’s a huge moment," Heughan told me of Jamie\'s decision to fight Black Jack regardless of the year he promised Claire. "He can’t help it. He sees Randall doing something to someone he loves … and it’s uncontrollable fury that Jamie has. He sees the same thing happening to Fergus that has happened to him, so it’s totally understandable in my mind that he does this."
Claire might not see things the same way, especially since Jamie\'s incarceration means she\'s going to have to deal with the potential loss of their child alone. Heughan said the next episode, "Faith," is going to showcase some of Balfe\'s best performances to date.
"It’s this terrible repercussion in the next episode, and it’s a very strong episode for Caitriona. She’s amazing in it. It’s so upsetting and so sad," he said. "There’s a real brittleness to her when they come back together. It’s so tough, and beautifully played by Caitriona."
The duel doesn\'t only affect Claire and Jamie. Not only is Black Jack potentially fatally wounded of a pretty on-the-nose injury to the groin, but his confidence is even more shattered.
Calling the injury after his defeat at Wentworth Prison a "jewel" of a moment, Menzies said of his character, "I think that almost bulletproof kind of confidence we see in [Season 1] is fractured in this season."
The synopsis for "Faith" reads: "Claire is brought to L’Hopital Des Anges where doctors try to save her life and that of her unborn baby. King Louis asks Claire to judge two men accused of practicing the dark arts – one an enemy, one a friend."
Outlander airs Saturdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Starz.
