When I was 12 years old my older brother (by 9 years) lent me a book. There were these paper birds in there, as bookmarks. They were so delicate and beautiful I wanted to know how to make them. So, I took them apart and, in putting them together again, figured out what folds I needed and where to make them. There were 4 birds in that book and I noticed they all had the same basic folds: What I now know as the petal base. I took that base and experimented. I've been folding paper ever since, I'm 39 now. I sit and fold bus and train tickets, till receipts, and the like: practicing my basic folds; mountain, valley, sink etc. Whatever piece of paper I have in my hand I start folding automatically, I do it without thinking.
